The **Aguja Guillaumet** (in English, Guillaumet Needle) is located on the **Fitz Roy Cordon**. Although it is one of the most accessible climbing areas, **this guided ascent is only suitable for sustained climbers**.

In fact, you will need a very good physical training and a vast experience in **multi-pitch rock climbing** as well as ice climbing. The round trip will take between 14 and 16 hours. Moreover, the altitude change will be around 1.000 meters.

This **alpine climbing I am proposing today consists in 3 challenging days** starting from **El Chaltén**. Please find here below the day-by-day program.

#### itinerary of the aguja guillaumet

**Day 1**

A transfer will take us **from El Chaltén to the Eléctrico River**, where we will start the hike approaching progressively to “Piedra del Fraile”. After 5 or 6 hours will reach our campsite, the **Piedra Negra bivouac** at 1.600 meters of altitude. During this day you will find steep terrains with some scree in the last section of the trail.

**Day 2**

Today is the most important day: **our summit attempt!** Therefore, we will get up early (around 2 a.m.). First, and after a light breakfast, we start the hike in direction to the **“Paso Guillaumet”** (2.000 meters above sea level), along a small glacier while finding mixture of rocky and snowy terrains.

Then, once in that high pass, we’ll take the famous **“Amy route”**. It is the trail laying on the **East face of the Aguja Guillaumet**. Its slopes have an average inclination of 50°- 60°. The route continues with **4 rock climbing pitches (class IV and V, intermediate-sustained level)**. Finally, the trail ends with an ice ramp leading to the summit (2.574 meters of altitude). We did it!!!

For the return, we will descend by rappelling down to the beginning of the Amy Route. From there, we will hike down to the Piedra Negra bivouac again. Here we will spend the last night.

**Day 3**

Final day in which we’ll hike back to the bridge of the Eléctrico River. There, a transfer will be waiting to take us to El Chaltén. Ending of the program.

The Aguja Guillaumet guided alpine climbing

Let me show you all that Aguja Guillaumet has to offer, specially for newly arrived mountaineers. It is an ideal spot for a first approach to the place as well as to get used to weather and rock conditions.

As a passionate about alpine rock climbing I have guided in **Aguja Guillaumet** more than 25 times. No it’s your turn! Join me on this 3-day trip and discover such an amazing granite spire.

According to the amount of snow and the group’s level I can propose two routes to ascend Aguja Guillaumet.

On the one hand, we can try to climb its east face, known as the **Couloir Amy**. The total length of the route is 450 meters, with ice slopes of 60°. It is an easy to intermediate climb.

On the other hand, you will have the option to climb its west side. In this case I suggest the multi-pitch routes of **Fonrouge-Comesaña**. It has 12 different pitches ranging from easy to high technical difficulty.

All my guests should feel comfortable **using crampons and some ice and snow techniques**. You don’t need prior climbing experience. However, if you have some experience you will be able to perform better during the ascent.

It will be three days of great physical demand for which **it is mandatory to have a good fitness condition**. Also keep in mind that you must carry a backpack of about 25 kilograms. You will need to **bring your personal equipment** (clothes, sleeping bag, insulation mat, etc.), **group equipment** (tent, pots, heaters, etc.) **and food**. It is also possible to hire porters.

We will at 8:00 a.m. to check the equipment and then a transfer will take us to the Electrico River bridge. We will walk a couple of hours to get to Piedra del Fraile. From here we’ll ascend about 1000 meters by a well-marked trail at first and then by a series of moraines. After approximately 3 hours we’ll arrive at the Piedra Negra’s bivouac, where we will camp for the next two nights.

Very early in the morning we will get up, have breakfast and begin the approach to the base of the spire by the right bank of the glacier coming from the Guillaumet. Depending on the route chosen for the ascent our approach time will vary between 2 to 3 hours. You will enjoy the climbing and the beautiful panoramic views that this needle offers. We’ll rappel along the same track and return to our bivouac for a delicious dinner and a good night rest.

Today we will get up without alarm clock, disarm the camp, pack our backpacks and start our descent to Piedra del Fraile. After a rest we’ll continue our way towards the bridge of the Electrico River. Our transfer will be waiting for us to return to El Chaltén.

El Chaltén. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to El Chaltén. The easiest way to get there is flying from Buenos Aires to El Calafate. For those who come from other points I also recommend getting to El Calafate and from there, take the bus to El Chaltén. The transfer El Chaltén-Electrico River Bridge-El Chaltén is included in the price.

If you are a mountaineer with good technical experience (rock climbing class IV and V), who is looking for a new challenge. You will certainly feel attracted to the southern part of Argentina. Where you will encounter many eminent peaks, such as the  one that I will invite you to climb with me : **Aguja Guillaumet.**

Some also like to call the peak : **“La Guillo”, Aguja (needle) Guillaumet** **which is one of the first summits of the well-known technically challenging mountain in the world**, **Fitz Roy. It is also known as Cerro Chalten**, located in the Southern Patagonia area.

People say that is impossible to go over the clouds but we know that as a fact, that phrase does not include us, climbing lovers and passionate mountaineers. Besides, even the Tehuelche indigenous tribes named  it “smoking mountain”, because of the many clouds that often surround the mountain peaks.

**AGUJA GUILLAUMET 3-DAY MOUNTAINEERING TREK ITINERARY DETAILS:** 

**Day 1: El Chalten – Piedra Negra**

Our journey will start with a bit of help, a bus transfer that is going to take us to Electrico River. From there we will start our trek along the Electric Valley and will then arrive to “Piedra del Fraile”. Later on, we will start to climb up the peak, around 5-6 hours with an elevation approximately of 1000 meters to reach our vivac camp “Piedra Negra”. As a side note, I would like to bring into your attention that it is very likely that we encounter very steep areas along our path and possibly/ including a lot of sharp stones.

**Day 2: Summit Attempt**

After a short rest we will wake up around 02:00 a.m. on our second day to get ready for our summit attempt. During this part of the trip we will go through different types of terrain, mostly rock and snow.  Reaching 2000 m/a/s/l, “Paso Guillaumet” will give us a welcome. From this point onwards, we will start “ Amy Route”, which is along the East face, and further after this point we will climb a slope of around 50°- 60°.

The route will continue with 4 rock climbing class IV – V and ramp snow will accompany us until we reach the summit at (2,574 m/s/n/l). For the descent, we will rappel to the start of the route and then walk back to our camp site “Piedra Negra”. The entire activity will take us about 14 to 16 hours while climbing in total 1000 meters of altitude.

Note: An alternative route exists, the Fonrouge ridge.

**Day 3: Piedra El Fraile – El Chalten**

On our last day, we will return back to our starting point, the Electrico river bridge (4-5 hs) where a transfer will be waiting for us to take us back to El Chaltén.
