**Have you ever heard about the “Seven Lakes”?** It is one of the most beautiful areas of the Andes, and this is your chance to explore it on a mountain bike, come join me!

**The Seven Lakes Road is one of the most attractive destinations of the Argentinean Patagonia**. It connects Villa La Angostura, a charming town near Bariloche, with San Martin de Los Andes. Rather than seven, **the road crosses eight beautiful lakes and allows us to enjoy two national parks,** Lanín and Nahuel Huapi.

On the first day of this tour, **we will meet in Bariloche** to check the equipment and clear doubts. The next day we’ll get to Arrayanes National Park by catamaran, to start the adventure. What follows are three days of stunning mountain biking crossing all these **breathtaking lakes surrounded by lush forests and impressive mountains**.

This trip doesn’t require to be an expert mountain biker, but you do need to have a good fitness level. We will cycle a total distance of 135km and **you should be prepared to cycle from 38 to 49km per day**. For more information, you can check the itinerary below!

Meeting and briefing

We take the catamaran to Arrayanes National Park and begin our cycling at the Quetrihue Peninsula, towards Villa La Angostura. After lunch we follow the “Seven Lakes” route, bordering the Espejo and Correntoso lakes.

Accommodation in Hosteria 7 Lagos.

1st stage: Bariloche - Hosteria 7 Lagos

After breakfast we get on the bikes and go through Pichi Traful, and the lakes of Escondido, Villarino, Falkner and Hermoso.

2nd stage: Correntoso Lake - Hermoso Lake

After reaching San Martín we can enjoy panoramic views of Lácar and Machónico Lakes.

“Seven Lakes” Mountain Bike Tour from Bariloche to San Martin

Are you looking for **a once-in-a-lifetime mountain bike adventure**? Then this 8-day trip is for you. **Cross the Andes** twice with expert local guides!

**The Andes mountain range, one of the largest in the world, runs along the west of South America**. With many glaciers, volcanoes, lakes, forests, and a rich flora and fauna, this huge chain passes through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile.

This 8-day tour (7 days of cycling) is your chance to **cross the Andes two times on a mountain bike**. We will meet in San Martin de los Andes and spend 7 days discovering amazing spots such as **the Valdivian jungle in Chile, and the Lanin National Park in Argentina**.

Furthermore, we will have the opportunity to **sail in the deep-blue waters of Patagonia**. For a complete description of the trip, you can see the itinerary below!

Keep in mind that for this roundtrip expedition you should have some **mountain bike experience and a good fitness level**. We will ride, on both gravel and asphalt roads, from 21 to 70km per day. Be ready for **challenging uphill rides and adrenalin charged descents**!

In the in the afternoon we meet in San Martin de los Andes to prepare the mountain bikes and have a tour briefing.  

No mountain biking.

Meeting in San Martin de los Andes

We cross the trails within the Mapuche Community, surrounded by rural forest landscapes.

Following the 48 Road we cross the Lanin National Park and border Lake Lacar. After some uphills sections we finally reach Yuco. Lunch on the beach, and continue to the Hua-Hum Hostel.

Distance: 47km (gravel roads)

San Martin - Hua Hum Hostel

We cross to Chile by the Hua-Hum pass (659m). We sail in the Pirihueico Lake towards Puerto Fuy, with amazing views of the Choshuenco volcano. Amazing downhill biking towards Neltume.

Trek at the Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve.

Distance: 22km (gravel and asphalt).

Hua Hum Hostel - Neltume (Chile)

Awesome views of the Villarica volcano and Neltume Lake. We follow a semi-abandoned route with many panoramic points. We descend “Cuesta de los Añiques” towards Coñaripe and the Calafquen Lake.

Distance: 49km (gravel road)

Neltume - Coñaripe 

We have the chance to rest and explore the surroundings. Optional: go by bicycle to the hot springs, or to try rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, etc.

Rest day in Coñaripe

Bordering the Calafquen and Panguipulli lakes, and the Pullingue lagoon, we cross from Coñaripe, Chile, to Choshuenco, Argentina.

Distance: 70km (asphalt road)

Coñaripe (Chile) - Choshuenco (Argentina)

Free morning on the lake beach.

Then we begin the ascent of the Cordillera towards Puerto Fuy, where we cross to Puerto Pirihueico.

Distance: 21km (asphalt road)

Choshuenco - Puerto Pirihueico - Hua Hum

Rest day at the inn. Half-day trek optional.

In the afternoon, we return to San Martin by boat, crossing the Nonthue and Lacar lakes.

Experience the lakes of ancient glaciers that once existed in the north of Patagonia. By mountain biking along our circuit trail, we’ll visit secretive valleys and slopes that hold beautiful scenery.

We will begin our adventure in Villa La Angostura, a beautiful town along the shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake in the Argentinian province of Neuquén.

The town, surrounded by lakes, forests and mountains, is considered one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of Patagonia. This gives rise to its nickname of the Garden of Patagonia.

Following the unpaved, wooded roads towards Villa Traful, a hamlet in the province of Neuquén that lies within the Nahuel Huapi National Park.

The curvy dirt road that winds and rolls up and downhill follows the shoreline of the Traful and Limay rivers. We’ll follow the Paso del Cordoba, which offers incredible views of various colourful rock formations.

Sleep under the stars at the Filo Hua Hum camping site with only the sound of the crackling of the bonfire.

We’ll continue onwards following the shoreline of the Meliquina Lake, which is surrounded by the Patagonian forest, stuffed with lengas and coihues.

Then we will complete our 4-day mountain biking tour through the shadowy forest that takes us to the city of San Martin de los Andes, which lies at the foot of the mountain chain.

The level of difficulty for this tour is intermediate, which means those who can participate must be aged 18 years old and over.

The unique area surrounding the Patagonian city of San Martin de los Andes makes it the perfect place to experience by mountain bike.

Cross the incredible woods of the Lanin National Park and feel the deep resilience of the indigenous Mapuche community.

We’ll head to the great glacial Lago Escondido (Hidden Lake) that rests close to the border of Argentina and Chile. It is located to the south of Lacar Lake, both of which are surrounded by the Andean mountain range, and sparsely populated.

Crossing the beautiful mountain trails, we’ll bike towards the north of San Martin de los Andes. Our ride leads us on varying paths in Laguna Rosales before continuing towards the base of Cerro Colorado. With its volcanic origin, and its cone, red summit provides stunning backdrops as we ride.

Then we will ride along the Valle del Aguila, which connects the Cerro Chapelco. All the time we will cross the ancient lands of the Mapuche, an indigenous group of south-central Chile and south-western Argentina.

Explore the vitality of nature in the pristine Patagonian region that’s shared by Chile and Argentina.

Mountain bike across spectacular sites including the Valdivian jungle, volcanic craters, and glacial lakes. Our adventure is a round circuit and begins and ends in San Martin de los Andes.

San Martin de los Andes is an Argentinian city in the western province of Neuquén that rests at the foot of the Andes.

Beginning here we’ll head to the Lanin National Park, an incredible host of natural beauty. Thick forest woods blend into leafier terrain and then green meadows, while the ice cold glacial waters shadow our trail.

Crossing the border into Chile we continue towards Pucón. Our trail takes up past the steaming volcano of Villarrica, which last erupted in 2015, and the calmer volcano of Quetrupillán, which last erupted in 1872.

The thick Andino-Patagónico forest provides dramatic surroundings that offer an incredible biking adventure.

Then we’ll head back east towards the Argentinian border via a slowly ascending wooded trail. We’ll cross on one of the less used but most beautiful border crossing, the Carirriñe pass. The inicial section runs through large forests of lengas and coihues.

Passing the beautiful Laguna Verde, we’ll head closer to our starting point. The large forested region brings us to the lakes of Curruhué Grande and Curruhué Chico, before finally biking full circle back to San Martin de los Andes.

The difficulty of this mountain bike trip is medium, and so it is open to people aged over 18.

The pristine majesty of Patagonia is unrivalled across the world, with its unique landscapes, weather, culture and inhabitants. In 14 days we’ll explore the vast and vibrant region as we mountain bike through its incredible nature.

Along our exhilarating trip, the chain of Andean mountains will be our constant companion. For a large chunk of the journey we’ll be discovering the bubbling volcanic regions, home to crusting craters and spurting hot springs.

These volcanic regions are homed in four beautiful national parks. Volcanos that we will meet include Lanín, with its snow-covered cater; Chile’s active Villarrica volcano, whose Mapuche name translates as Devil’s House; and Quetrupillán, which lasted erupted in 1872.

The other volcano is Mocho-Choshuenco, the twined giants whose glacial-covered craters are now dormant.

As well as mountain biking through these wonderful regions, we’ll take advantage of the natural benefits and enjoy bathing in the hot springs that emanate from the volcanic ground. And we’ll also taste the purified Patagonian waters directly from its rivers and creeks.

With the natural delights guaranteed, we’ll also cover the cultural pleasures by tasting the famed Malbec wine and delicious barbecue food.

Welcome evening including setting out the criteria for the trip.

Bariloche

We go round Nahuel Huapi Lake on paved road until arriving at the famous hotel Llao Llao near Puerto Pañuelo. Embark on a boat on Nahuel Huapi to the Victoria Island and then to the Bosque de Arrayanes. On that place we get on our bikes and pedal to Villa la Angostura on a 12-km trail, with a 150m elevation gain. This path has a short part which is a little bit more technical and in which it is possible to walk. Total: 42 km.

Bariloche - Villa La Angostura

We start peddling to the area of the river and Lake Correntoso. We begin going along 7 Lagos Route until we find an unpaved road that will take us to Villa Traful. This road goes uphill to about 900m until we reach a Portezuelo and from there we are left with a 25km road, in which we will go up and downhill along the shoreline of Traful Lake. The whole day will be spent in the forest in the mountain. Total: 60km.

We start early on a curvy dirt road that will continuously alter between going up and downhill. It will go along the shoreline of Traful Lake. There we will take Paso del Córdoba.  There with an incredible view of the various colours of rock formations. Total: 72km.

Villa Traful - Paso Córdoba

We take the road along Meliquina Lake shoreline. The first half is under sunshine and then we move into the shadowy forest towards the paved road that will take us to San Martin de los Andes. Total: 54km.

Filo Hua Hum - San Martín de los Andes

Free day to do optional activities, which are not included on the trip. Horseback riding, trekking, mountain bike circuit around Chapelco Ski Center.

We pass through the little village of Junín de los Andes, then we turn west towards the mountain that gives its name to the national park, the Lanin Volcano (3,776m). The road will give us on every turn the best views of the volcano to which we will slowly be approaching. To end the day we go through a forest of araucarias that we will lead us to the base of the volcano where we set up our campsite. Total: 70km.

San Martín de los Andes - Paso Tromen

Only a few miles away we stop for inmigration and customs, then once on Chilenean ground, we begin a long descent through the woods. The landscape changes, it turns more humid and leafy, with incredible rivers and green meadows. Getting closer to Pucón we will discover a new cone, the Villarrica Volcano with its steaming crater. Total: 88km.

 Paso Tromen - Pucón

Day off to do optional activities, such as rafting, walking around the city, relax by the lake shore, visit hot springs, hiking the Villarrica Volcano and take a look at its steaming crater.

Pucón

We begin going uphill entering Villarica National Park between Villarica and Quetrupillán volcanoes. We continue going uphill into the dense Andino-Patagónico forest. This is one of the most special parts of the trip, and even though it will be more demanding, the land, the volcanoes and araucaria forests become a great award. Once we finish the transvolcanic route, we will get to the town of Coñaripe. Total: 55km.

Pucón - Ruta Transvolcánica - Termas de Coñaripe

We journey towards the shores of Neltume Lake with great views. Our lunch will be by the shore of this lake from where we can see two new volcanoes, Mocho and Choshuenco. To end the day, we bike about 10km uphill till the town where we spend the night, Neltume. Total 36km.

Termas de Coñaripe - Neltume

Before leaving we can trek around to find better and closer views of the volcanoes, and also the beautiful waterfalls of the Fuy River. Then we continue on the shores of Pirihueico Lake where we take a boat transfer. The boat ride takes about 2 hours, with great views of the rainforest that covers all the surrounding mountains. Back on land we cross the border and we continue to Nonthue. We can visit two small lakes of the area and an amazing waterfall: Chachin. Total 45km.

Neltume - Nonthué

We start the last day of our journey. The trail goes parallel to Lacar Lake on its north coast. Amazing views will be waiting for us, around noon we stop on Yuco Beach, the perfect place to recover our energies. In the afternoon we continue our way to San Martín de los Andes, we pass through Mapuche lands and we ride narrow forest trails to a new beach called La Islita. Then begins the last 10km of our journey to San Martín de los Andes! Total 42km.

Nonthue - San Martín de los Andes
