Situated in the southeastern corner of Europe, Bulgaria is home to mountains, meadows, forests and a sandy coastline, making it the perfect place for a mountain biking adventure.
Among the most popular spots in the country to head is the Rhodope Mountains. Sitting in the south of the country, most guides recommend spending at least a few days here, exploring the mountain villages and checking out various trials.
Due to the mountains’ close proximity to Greece, some guides offer the opportunity to cycle all the way down to the Aegean Sea from Bulgaria.
Another popular spot for mountain bikers is at Sredna Gora, near Central Balkan National Park. Guides recommend spending at least one weekend here to visit some of the area’s unique cultural and geologic sites. Such as the Thracian Temple Complex and natural hot springs.
During the summer, average daily temperatures range from 20 ºC to 25 ºC (68 ºF to 77 ºF) in Bulgaria. Summer is also the most frequent season for rain, with an average of 220 millimeters (8.7 inches) falling each month.
Any mountain biking trip to likely begins with a flight into the Sofia International Airport (SOF). Many guides will meet you here and provide transport to the start of the trip, but if not, it is also fairly simple to rent a car and drive.
