The Făgăraș is a section of mountains that makes up part of the much larger **Carpathian Mountain Range.** Here you’ll be able to find tall mountains, including the tallest in Romania, **Moldovan Peak (2,544 meters).** 

We love heading to the mountains in Romania in the winter. It’s snowy, icy and cold, but that all adds to the fun. You will need to have previous experience climbing though, this is not a trip for beginners.

Across the two days, we’ll be climbing ice, trekking through snow and more. All our guides are certified and have experience in these mountains so you’ll be in safe hands.

Depending on your level and interest, I’ll adapt the climbing route, objectives, peak and mountaineering techniques.

Furthermore, keep in mind that for this trip you will need to bring waterproof jacket and pants, two pairs of gloves, warm clothes, a sleeping bag, winter boots, crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness, sunglasses, sunscreen, first-aid kit and a flashlight.

Winter Mountaineering Weekend in the Carpathians

**Explore the winter landscapes of Romania during this mountaineering trip to the summit of Lespezi!**  

At **2,516 meters,** Lespezi is among the highest mountains in Romania. Located within the Fagaras, a range in the **Southern Carpathian Mountains**, this is a challenging climb with a tough approach and complicated descent, particularly during the winter when we can expect snowy and icy conditions.

We will meet at Balea Cascada, aiming for an early departure on the first cable car up the mountain. After arriving at **Balea Lake** and warming up with a cup of tea, we begin the trek to **Caltun Refuge**, which we expect to take 4-6 hours. Once we arrive at the rustic refuge, have a quick dinner before turning in for an early night.

We **begin our summit push early the next morning**, choosing our line up the wall based on conditions. After conquering the wall, we traverse a ridge to reach the summit. We then **abseil back down to Caltun Refuge** for our **second night on the mountain**. The following day, we descend back down to Balea Lake and take the cable car back down.

This is a **tough climb** **that requires previous mountaineering experience** and solid fitness. For super fit climbers, it is possible to complete the entire trip in 2 days if conditions are favorable.

3-day Winter ascent on Lespezi (Caltun) North Face, Fagaras Mountains

The Fagaras Mountains are home to spectacular peaks in Romania, where you’ll find some of the loftiest, iciest and highest alpine mountains.

Standing at 2,515 meters, Lespezi is the fifth highest peak in Romania. And with generous coatings of snow layering the slopes and valleys, Lespezi is the ideal setting for some exciting climbing.

We’ll base ourselves in the Caltun mountain hut, which rests at 2,135 meters close to the high altitude Caltun Lake.

Our approach to the refuge involves a basic hike to reach. Once we are at the base of the wall we’ll choose the line that looks in best condition. This will get us to the ridge of Lespezi and eventually to the summit.

On our challenging descent we’ll use 1 or 2 abseils while the sun’s still shining as we reach for the refuge.

Potential participants must have a good level of fitness, as well as having previous climbing experience preferably under winter conditions.

After meeting in the morning we’ll catch the Balea Cascada cable car to Balea Lake. From here we’ll start the hike to the very basic, unstaffed, Caltun refuge (4-6 hours from Balea Lake). Overnight at Caltun refuge. We will cook dinner on gas stove and will get early into our sleeping bags.

An early morning start with a quick approach (20-30 mins) to the base of the wall. We will pick the line that looks in best condition and we aim on exiting the wall to the ridge in good time. We will reach the Lespezi summit before descending using 1 or 2 abseils as we return to the Caltun refuge. A second night here and a second Jetboil dinner.

To the summit

Another early start and hike back to Balea Lake (4-6 hours from Caltun refuge). Another cup of tea or maybe a hot soup at one of the hotels and then the cable car back down to Balea Cascada and to the car park.
