FAQs: Splitboarding in India

What should I know about Splitboarding India?

India is a big place and splitboarding is a great way to get out and explore just one small, well relatively small in comparison, part of it!

Any trip to the northern region of India, where the Himalayas are found, involves landing in New Delhi. Many guides will opt to meet you here before transferring as a group to your final destination. Take some time to explore the Indian capital, which will feel like a world away once you head north.

Jammu and Kashmir, at the very northern tip of India, are one of the most popular spots to come for a splitboarding adventure. However, Gulmarg, which is a bit farther northwest; Himachal Pradesh, farther south along the rangel and  Uttarakhand, bordering Nepal, all offer excellent splitboarding too!

Why should I choose India for my Splitboarding adventure?

Stunning scenery

The Himalayas, surrounding foothills and sprawling valleys of Jammu and Kashmir are sublimely beautiful. Complete with rushing rivers, snow-capped peaks, evergreen forested slopes and picturesque valleys, there’s so much to see. Getting out on a splitboard lets you cover lots of ground and see as much as you can.

Avoid the crowds

Unlike many other popular splitboarding destination, you won’t have to share the slopes in India with many others, if anyone at all. Splitboarding is still a well-kept secret here. While Jammu is home to some of the country's most popular ski resorts, few wander off and into the backcountry and enjoy the freedom provided by getting off-piste.

Come for the culture

When you're not out on the slopes, explore your surroundings and acquaint yourself with the region’s unique Indo-Tibetan culture. Mata Vaishno Devi is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site in Jammu city, to which 10 millions pilgrims come each year! Ladakhi food is another delicious way to explore this area, try thukpa, a traditional Tibetan noodle soup while you’re here!

What can I expect from the weather in India?

During the winter, temperatures drop to around freezing. They get even colder the higher up in elevation you are and when factoring in windchill. While there is limited precipitation at this time of year, there is still generally plenty of snow cover for skiing.

How do I get there

For most trips, guides will arrange to meet you at the international airport in New Delhi (DEL). However, for ski touring trips to Kashmir, it is also possible to transfer to the Srinagar airport (SXR).
