1-day hike in South Sister Volcano, Oregon

South Sister (3,157 m.) is the third tallest peak in Oregon. In this day trip you will hike to the summit of this amazing volcano under expert guidance.

The Three Sisters are three peaks of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, a section of the Cascade Range, in western North America. South Sister is the highest of them and the most popular for mountaineering adventures. It is also the youngest in geologic terms.

This day tour involves a 6-miles hike in a strenuous terrain. The traverse starts at the Devils Lake and passes by Lewis, Clark, and Prouty Glaciers. The Prouty is the largest glacier in Oregon, with an area of 1 square kilometer.

The top section of South Sister is exceedingly steep and rugged. Furthermore, we can find large sections of snow, so trekking poles and traction may be needed.

However, the reward is great. Up on the summit of South Sister, a broad, snowy crater with a small lake, you will have a panoramic view of half the state of Oregon, with its imposing peaks and its beautiful glaciers and lakes.
