    Disclaimer

Due to the ever-changing nature of glacier conditions, summit hikes are only available during the designated hiking season. While the exact timing can vary each year based on weather, the season typically runs from April to August. Outside of this period, tours to the glacier summits are not possible for safety reasons.

Equipment you will need to bring

Our hikes to Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s highest peak, and Hrútsfjallstindar typically last between 10 and 15 hours. Weather conditions can change dramatically, ranging from –5°C at the summit to over 20°C at lower elevations. To stay comfortable and safe, it’s essential to dress in layers that can be easily added or removed as needed. The base layer should be made of moisture-wicking materials such as wool or synthetics—avoid cotton, as it retains moisture and offers poor insulation.

Pack enough food to sustain you throughout a long day on the mountain. A good combination includes a few (3–5) sandwiches along with some sweets and chocolate for quick energy. It's important to carry water in a way that's easily accessible—hydration systems like CamelBaks are ideal, or use water bottles that can be attached to your backpack or climbing harness. For optimal hydration, consider mixing your water with a light rehydrating energy drink.
