This beginner ski touring course in Austria takes place over five days and is designed for you to have a comprehensive overview of this thrilling winter sport.
The course takes place in Zell am See/Kaprun, and covers several introductory aspects of ski touring. The contents of the course are both theoretical and practical. The following topics are included:
Practical training of movement on skis with belts uphill
Kick turns training, A turns
Teaching techniques of off-road driving
Theory and practical training of group movement in open terrain
Practical presentation of ski equipment, its demonstration, and test
Lecture on avalanches and practice of avalanche search
First aid lecture
Theory of ski tour planning
The program covers movement techniques on touring skis when climbing, including the correct mounting and use of climbing skins. Kick turns and how to safely traverse and slide down steep slopes are also part of the course. Additionally, you will have the chance to try out various alpine equipment, gain basic avalanche knowledge, and learn the principles of movement in open terrain. First aid and planning alpine tours are also in the curriculum.
In the evenings, we will enjoy some theory and you will have lectures about ski touring equipment. We will take a closer look at the individual types of ski touring and freeride skis and boots, types of climbing skins, and poles.
The course will also include both a theoretical and practical session about avalanches and search and rescue. Additionally, you will learn about superstructure avalanche equipment (avalanche finder, probe, shovel, avalanche backpack, etc.). We will talk about the stability of snow layers and show ways to test them in the field.
In the first aid course, in addition to the basics of resuscitation, we will focus specifically on the issue of hypothermia and frostbite.
To join this course, you will need to be a confident black slopes skier or snowboarder. No prior ski touring or freeride experience is necessary. The minimum age to join is 15, and keep in mind that the physical intensity of the course is high, so you will have to be fit.
