Description

Bumthang Owl Trek is one of the easy treks in Bhutan which provides a glimpse of the rich culture and biodiversity of the country. The trail lies in the stunning Choekhor Valley in the district of Bhuthang.

The area of Choekhor is home to a large number of owls which hoot during the night, hence the unusual name. On moonlit nights you can even spot a handful of these playful birds hanging from twigs, blinking their big eyes.

On this unique 3-day trip, we’ll see the plush plant and birdlife thriving in the Himalayas. You’ll be able to sight several unique species including the big monal pheasants which reside in Tharpaling area.

We’ll begin from Menchugang and hike through the ancient village of Dhur, home to the nomadic people of Borka and Khep. The silence of the nights will give way to the interesting hooting of the owls.

You’ll walk through lush forests of fir, juniper, rhododendrons, and maple and will be mesmerized by the wildflowers in the valley. The trail takes you across the gorgeous Drangela Pass(3,600 m), offering stunning vistas of the snow-capped peaks and blooming flowers alongside.

You’ll have a complete experience of trekking in Bhutan as we visit the monasteries of Zambhalha, Chuedak and Tharpaling before ending this remarkable trek. These monasteries serve as a window to the Buddhist way of living.

Start at Manchugang. Visit a popular village in Bumthang, called Dhur (2900m). It is a village of the nomadic Khep and Brokpa people, who herd the yaks and sheep.

Continue uphill through blue pine forest to reach the camp at Schonath (3450m). You’ll hear the hooting of owls in this area.

Day 2: Cross the Drangela Pass(3,600 m)

Trekking through the forest of hemlock, fir, birch, etc. arrive at the Drangela Pass (3600m). Experience breathtaking views of the valley and the snow-capped Himalayas. See the imposing Mount Bhutan Gangkar Punsum (7541m) standing tall in front of your eyed.

Day 3: Visit Buddhist monasteries

Visit the monasteries of Zambhalha, Chuedak and Tharpaling. While all three are remarkable, the Chuedak Monastery is particularly unusual, with around 100 statues of Avoloketeshivaras, in the form of Chukchizhey, the god of eleven heads.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
