Walk through three different kinds of forest
A visit to El Yunque tropical rainforest should definitely be on your list of things to do in Puerto Rico. Though it’s relatively small, by no means is it lacking the amazing biodiversity that you’d expect from a rainforest.
There are more than a dozen species of endemic Coquí frogs, known for their loud mating call, as well as many species of lizards and birds. The vegetation in the forest varies and can be divided into four different areas; on El Toro Trail, you’ll get to explore three different kinds of forest.
El Toro trail is special because, unlike the forest’s well-maintained trails which tend to draw crowds, it has a nice remote feel. It leads you to the highest peak in the forest, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding foliage, the coast, and several nearby towns.
The hike is a total of 4.5 miles, to the peak and back, and generally takes 4-5 hours. The last part before reaching Toro Peak is steep, so be prepared to exert yourself. There are also parts of the trail that can get very muddy, so be careful and dress accordingly.
Come explore this lush rainforest and be amazed by the views from its highest point.
