This 2-day course is perfect for those starting in rock climbing, and for those who wish to acquire rock climbing skills for their mountaineering adventures. It will take place on Mount Mitsutoge, which is located in the Chubu region and overlooks Lake Kawaguchi, as well as offering stunning views of Mt. Fuji. This beautiful peak is a traditional place to learn alpine climbing in Japan, with around 70 climbing routes on agglomerate rock for different climbing levels.
In this program, we will tackle some of the grade 5.6- 5.8 routes. We will learn how to handle a rope, how to belay and rappel, and safety management. Of course, we will have a lot of fun too!
In terms of the itinerary, we will meet on the first day of our trip at 9.30 am and then head out to Mount Mitsutoge. We will practice ropework and climb on the three passes. Then on the second day, we will focus on rock climbing and rappeling until it is time to part at 3 pm. Although some of the climbing might seem intimidating, I will be there every step of the way to help and guide you.
So, are you ready for an exciting Mount Mitsutoge climbing course? Then book your place now and come rock climbing in Japan with me. I will be happy to share my knowledge of the rocks, the mountains, and the country with you!
And, once you have mastered your technique, if you want to practice some more, join me on some of the other adventures in Japan that I offer!

Our team of experienced local guides is dedicated to providing unforgettable ski touring, rock climbing, and hiking adventures across Japan, including some of the country’s most stunning regions like Hokkaido, Sapporo, Yatsugatake, and beyond. With in-depth knowledge of Japan’s diverse landscapes, our guides offer an authentic, expert-led experience in the country’s most iconic alpine areas
Jun is a responsible and reliable guide. He is also knowledgeable on the local flora and fauna and managed to show us quite a few interesting alpine flowers, birds and animals. He is kind and helpful and converses well in English. I will not hesitate to recommend him to any anyone needing an English speaking guide in Japan.
As for Kikuo-san, we both really liked her. She is very pleasant. A bit quiet spoken in a good way. She obviously knows the Akan region very well, as she lives inside the national park. She has very responsible and well organised. I would have her guide us again, when we go back to the area.

Just back from Hakuba –Japan and I’m so pleased to confirm we got such a great experience with Iwao who has provided a service above all expectations. Indeed assisting a family confronted to a new environment requires a certain level of patience and attention and all the family appreciated his sense of responsibilities and seriousness which allowed us to really enjoy this region by experiencing touring, hicking and of course skiing in immaculate powder. Iwao was very discreet but always acted to ensure we could take the best of all Hakuba mountains could offer to us during these 5 days. This experience will for sure remain in all our minds for long and this will be mainly thanks to Iwao ! Best, Arnaud
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
