7-day snowshoeing in Tromso, Norway

Experience Finnish Lapland on snowshoes and a **husky sled tour in winter**! Join me on this **8-day unique experience** in the middle of winter, when the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are very high. Visiting Tromsø, in Norway, offers an interesting contrast to this great winter trip.

Darkness, lots of snow, sauna, **Aurora Borealis**, are all words that  spontaneously come to mind when we think of Finnish Lapland.  And although winter is cold here, it is dry, so you feel the cold less than in a more humid climate. At this time of the year, it is dark in Lapland, but even now you have daylight. In July there are already 6 to 7 hours of daylight, thus not much less than in Central Europe.

There is plenty of snow everywhere, which sticks to the trees and transforms them into various fantasy figures. In this region – also rightly advertised as “Tosi Lappi” (“the true, genuine Lapland”)- we will only sporadically be in sparse forests, but mostly over the tree line.

In the **tri-border region**, we will enjoy unique views over large frozen lakes, the gentle Tunturi (Finnish fells) of **Finland** and the steeper fells and mountains of **neighboring Norway and Sweden**. Depending on the circumstances, a day tour will include the celebration of the sacred mountain of the Sami, the Saana. Yes, and the Northern Lights are there too, although seeing them may take a little more time than going for a sauna!

We will fly comfortably with a direct flight From Zurich to Tromsö, Norway, and from there a shuttle bus will take us to the **log cabins in Kilpisjärvi,** in the northeast of Finland, **far above the Arctic Circle.** From there, we will take star-shaped snowshoe tours, most of them directly from the hotel and sometimes a bus will take us to the tour starting point. So you can decide every day, whether you want to participate in the tour or do something different on your own.

We will take our time for **snowshoeing, experiencing nature, the silence**, the seclusion of the area, and we will also visit a tupa or kota (simple huts), where we kindle a fire, warm up and grill something to eat, if we can.

Along the way, I will tell you stories and legends of the Sami, originally nomadic people in the polar region of Europe, who have long roamed the area as nomads before settling down here. **We will also visit Tromso**, with the northernmost university and cathedral of the world, and nearly 80,000 inhabitants offers a strong contrast to the sparsely populated Kilpisjärvi, with just 100 inhabitants.

We will probably also see a reindeer during our time here, as this is their natural habitat! In the afternoon and evening we will look for the **Northern Lights**, as they draws its orbits in different colors in the sky.

I am a multi-lingual hiking guide, and I also speak fluent Finnish. I have personally organized this journey. **I have been touring Finland and especially Lapland for many years**, so I know the different areas from west to east, north to south and I am always enthusiastic about going there again.

We will also be traveling with **huskies in the Norwegian fjords** one day of the tour. These fjords are very close to our Finnish base, but they are very different. Put on winter clothes and enjoy the landscape as a musher of a dog-sledding club, getting a different perspective on the winter scenery. Of course, a sauna experience is also included in the program.

Arrival by plane in Tromsø and continue by shuttle bus to Kilpisjärvi village to log cabin. Dinner and overnight.

Arrival in Tromso

From the cabin settlement, we go on varied snowshoe tours in the region, of shorter and longer duration, partly directly from the settlement, partly with a taxi to the vast tundra landscapes. One day we will also be traveling with huskies and passing the wintry landscape either as a musher or in the sled. On the way there, we will stop for a small snack. As a conclusion, while we relax by a crackling fire with a coffee, tea and a small snack, we learn even more about the huskies and their way of life. Cold-weather clothes including shoes are provided and are included. You will also have one free day.

Despite the real Nordic winter, we will enjoy natural light. In the afternoon/ evening we even have great chances to see the Northern Lights, which draw mystical figures above our heads in various colors.

Winter adventure

Return from Kilpisjärvi by bus and plane to Zurich. After the tour, if possible, you will still have some time of your own, to do what you prefer, sauna, shopping, etc. At  dinner we can end the day with local specialties.

**If snowshoeing is something you always wanted to pursue, why not now? And why not in the beautiful island of Kvaloya, Norway? Join me on a once in a lifetime experience next season, just outside of Tromsö.**

The amazing **Kvaloya island** is a perfect site for snowshoeing, in the marvelous light of the Nordic winter. Also, from November to mid-January, **humpback whales** and **orcas** come to this very site in the Kattfjord fjord.

First, I will meet you either at the **Zurich airport** to fly to **Tromso**, or directly at Tromso. Once there, we will drive to Kattfjord fjord in the Kvaloya island.

From days 2 to 6, I will guide you on snowshoes across deserted valleys and barren landscapes, as well as bushy groves. From the **Tverrfjellet** (525 m) we will be able to see a unique view of the fjord. And from the top of the **Vasstranddalen** we will witness the magical sighting of the whales jumping for their herring. On Day 7, we will drive back to Tromsö and fly back home.

The **daily tours** in this program are simple and suited for beginners, and last between 4 and 5 hours. Given the unique **weather conditions** this time of the year, with the sun below the horizon, we can observe the first **northern lights**, with the whales just a few meters from us.

In terms of **equipment** you will need: snowshoes, ski poles, hiking or mountain boots, headlamp, and winter clothing (the average temperature in January is -4.4°C/24°F).

A rich breakfast and dinner will be prepared by Ulrica. **Flights** from Zurich to Tromso, and back, are also included. Departing from Germany or Austria is possible upon request.

Join me on an unforgettable snowshoeing hike in the best corners of the **Lyngen Alps** and enjoy the best quality snow!

There is still **a lot of snow** in the Lyngen Alps and Kåfjord. This is possible due to it is always sunny and the snow remains light and fresh in June. Here we can enjoy a snowshoe hike all day under the “midnight sun”.

Flight from Zurich to Tromso. With our rented car, we will go to Olderdalen and from there, to our chalet in the fjords. This accommodation is absolutely unique and comfortable. It has a kitchen, three bedrooms and two WC bathrooms  with sauna.

The options in the Lyngen Alps, Kåfjord and in the islands near the coast are endless. Not only do we climb the summits, but we mainly take routes with beautiful views of the primitive Nordic landscape.

We will also walk through Nordmannvikdalen and we will be able to see one of the moose living there. We will take a high route over Rypbergan, in Lyngenfjord, with spectacular views. In the lonely Rotsunddalen we’ll rest in the Pilterigammen, a classic old hut repaired for the few tourists.

Then we can walk to Reisadalen with its amazing forests, where we will find a completely different world of birds along the fjords. Eagles are quite common here. Finally, do not miss the island of Arnøya, where the views of the Arctic Ocean will surprise you. Here the reindeer herds roam the hills and mountains.

This snowshoeing trip in **Lyngenfjord is truly unique!** This peaceful region covered in snow year-round offers **the best snowshoe treks under the midnight sun of Norway.** Come next February and enjoy with me this magnificent place!

We flight from Switzerland to Tromso in northern Norway and we will head to the Lyngenfjord with a rental car. We will check in in our chalet, which is equipped with a kitchen, three bedrooms, two showers, WC and a small sauna.

We can reach the forest region in Rotsund Dalen.There we can spend some time admiring this amazing place while we snowshoe among those tall trees. If we are lucky,  we will get to see an elk!, one of the largest species within the deer family.

There are also amazing islands in the Arctic Ocean that you can’t miss. During this activity in Arnoya or Kagen island you can take your first steps snowshoeing where the mountains meet the ocean. There you will have the best view of Norway Fjords.

Last but not least, during the evening we can enjoy the first northern lights shining over our heads. It is the perfect opportunity to take some pictures of this stunning natural phenomenon.

**Join me for a 3 or 4 night package at my lodge in the Lyngen Alps.** Enjoy the amazing Northern Lights and some exciting guided activities like driving your own dog sled, riding a snow mobile, a boat fjord safari, snow shoeing or cross country skiing.

Due to low light pollution away from any city lights, my Lodge provides an ideal if not possibly one of the most interesting viewing points for the **Northern Lights** in **Scandinavia**. The dramatic snow covered jagged mountains and fjords create a spectacular framework for the night sky.

You will enjoy the northern lights directly from the lodge, it’s as simple as popping outside onto the viewing platform between your three course meal! You will not sit in cars for hours on end chasing the lights as they appear directly above the roof of the lodge.

After a scenic drive of 30 min, we reach the Reisa Valley. This area hosts our dog-sledding adventures into the wilderness of the northern lights. Besides, you will have the experience of being instructed how to “mush” your own team of dogs under the careful supervision and guidance from a professional.

Two people per sled take turns in driving while following a guide in front. The trail winds through open valleys that capture the low Arctic sun between the high jagged peaks of the region. Half way round the trail we’ll cook lunch over an open fire in large tents. The tour is completed, the dogs bid farewell and guests return to the lodge and enjoy a relaxing evening.

##### High frozen lakes adventure

The focus of this tour is to access the high mountains terrain via snowmobile. Once on the mountain plateau, guests will experience **ice fishing on the frozen lakes** for mountain trout and visit **spectacular viewpoints over the Lyngen Alps.**

During this activity you are passengers during the snowmobile transport to the high mountain plateau. The journey to the high lake via snow mobile takes 30 min through snow covered birch tree forests.

Once at the lake, a shelter camp is made and ice holes drilled through the ice so fishing can begin. The ice is so thick that it is possible to make a fire on the ice and cook the fresh fish directly at the camp. You will also be able to explore the surrounding area on snowmobiles in between fishing sessions.

Directly from the lodge, snow-shoeing enables all guests to access the **Arctic frozen forests**, see rare animal tracks of moose, lynx and wolverine and **reach high view points to see the entire Lyngen Peninsula national park from above the forest line**. After learning the simple techniques, I will lead you on a historical and natural journey that provides deeper appreciation to this spectacular region.

Norwegian culture is split equally between the land and the sea, and **on board the Spirit Lyngen boat you will experience a wide diversity of fjord life**.

The journey begins with **dolphin spotting** along the nature reserve at Spakenes en route to visit the historic stockfish drying process on the island of **Uloya**. Venturing over by boat to the Lyngen Alps east coast to witness the sheer towering rock walls that plunge into the ocean.

Europe’s largest eagle is the Havn Orn is regularly seen hunting for fish. A chance to **deep sea fish** for those who wish.

Northern lights in the Lyngen Alps

The **Lyngen Alps** are a gorgeous, breathtaking range of slopes and peaks. It is a winter wonderland. And on this **3 day winter activities package**, we have designed the perfect adventure for those people that want to see and do as much as they possibly can in the **Lyngen Alps**, while also getting to enjoy the comforts of a **full board, wonderful lodge**.

There are 2 different activities we offer to guests on the **3 day package**. They include a **dog sledding journey** and a **frozen lakes adventure**. **Necessary clothing** and **lunch** are provided for both activities.

The **dog sledding journey** lasts approximately **5 hours**, **1.5 hours** of which is spent **dog sledding**. We will take a **30 minute scenic drive** to the **Resia valley**. Once there, we will instruct you how to properly lead a dog sled and **"mush"** the dogs through the gorgeous winter landscape. Midway through the day, we will stop for an open fire lunch, before concluding the journey, saying good bye to the dogs, and returning to the lodge.

**The Frozen lakes adventure** lasts **5 hours** and involves **snowmobiling, snowshoeing** and **ice fishing**. We will visit the high mountain plateau on snowmobile, where the views of the **Lyngen Alps** are amazing. Afterwards, we will make our way to the the high lake to **ice fish**. The lake's ice is so thick that you will even be able to start a fire on it and cook your catch!
