Description

Join me for this unique program of snowboarding and exploration in the amazing Troll Peninsula, Northern Iceland. This 4-day heliboarding tour will take you to first descents and peaks that no one else has ever stepped on before.

For this program, I will meet you at Akureyri. For the next days, our base will be the Klængshóll Lodge, in the Skíðadalur valley. The lodge is located at the heart of the best ski terrain in the valley. This allows us to fly to the best spots right from our lodge. The nearest runs are only 3 minutes away!

For details on the itinerary, have a look at the extra information below.

This program takes place in the fantastic Troll Peninsula, where 90% of the peaks are suitable for snowboarding. What makes this area different from other snowboarding areas in the world is the uniqueness of the mountains standing right next to the deep blue ocean. There are even 1,300 m runs along the coastline.

A unique highlight of snowboarding in the Troll Peninsula in the late season is the possibility of snowboarding under the midnight sun. And earlier in the season, we can even catch the faboulous northern lights.

The snow pack in this area is basically coastal. March to April is good for powder. Later, May and June are good months for corn snow. Finally, there can also be sporadic powder snow in June.

This area has slopes that suit all snowboarding levels, from first-time heliboarders to experts. Also, note that groups on this program can combine both snowboarders and skiers.

I know the Troll Peninsula like the back of my hand, and I am ready to share this experience with you for you to have the trip of a lifetime. This year 2018 is our 11th season of heliboarding operations, and counting!

Are you ready? If you are interested in this 4-day heliboarding trip in Troll Peninsula (Iceland), request your booking for this season! See the Next Dates available below.

Itinerary

Day 1: Akureyri - Transfer to lodge

  • Arrival in Akureyri, Iceland

  • Transfer to Klængshóll Lodge (45 minutes)

  • Meet and greet, guest briefing and dinner:

    • Briefing on our plan for the next days, gear revision and relax

    • Note: if you don’t have enought time for this, we can also meet on Day 2 ready to snowboard. For example, if you come from the USA or Canada, we can meet then and start snowboarding that same day!

Day 2 to 4: Heliboarding days

  • Time for our first descents, adventure and exploration. You will have the chance to participate in Icelandic snowboarding history by snowboarding in areas never before visited!

  • During the evenings, we will spend time at the Klængshóll Lodge feasting on local dishes like on organic lamb, fish and game prepared by our in-house chef

  • In case of bad weather and no flying: the unique opportunity to visit Lake Mývatn Nature Reserve with its steaming hot springs, volcanos and lava fields is possible. Go splitboarding, whale watching, sea angling or relaxing in one the geothermal baths on the Troll Peninsula

Day 5: Heliboarding - Akuyreri

  • After packing our bags, we go on our last snowboarding day of the program. We have lunch in the field and head home for one last sauna or hot tub session.

About the guide

I'm Iceland's first and only IFMGA internationally certified mountain guide. I'm a member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides ACMG with whom I finished my certification. I have climbed and skied extensively all over the world, and I lived and worked in both the European Alps and the mountains of Western Canada.
I have brought this wealth of diverse experiences to Iceland and the Arctic North where I have to my name over a hundred first ascents and descents in Iceland and Greenland.
My love of the mountains grew from an early age working as a shepherd on my grandparent's farm on the Troll Peninsula in Northern Iceland. Or maybe it had something to do with my name, which in English would translate directly to Glacier Mountain man.
If you want to discover this beautiful country, please get in touch with me and let's leave together for incredible adventure!

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.

Hello! I have been thoroughly impressed by the service and assistance that explore-share have provided the past couple years in helping to plan my trip to the High Tatras in Poland. I really appreciated the flexibility that they provided in allowing me to rearrange my trip twice owing to covid. They were responsive and communicative throughout. This trip was part of my Stag weekend celebrations and explore-share connected me with an outstanding guide in the form of Marcel - he was an excellent recommendation and we really enjoyed our guided hike in the High Tatras with him. Marcel was an outstanding professional, placed a high focus on preparing well and staying safe, and was also a great guy! Highly recommend. Many thanks and best wishes - Richard
