Thermal springs sprout from the limestone soil. Volcanic earth rests in the villages of Myrties and Kantouni, remnants of ancient volcanoes.
The mostly barren island feature sheltered coves, while in the valleys of Pothia and Vathys spring olives, oranges and vines.
