Beginners’ sport climbing weekend in the Algarve on Cape St. Vincent in Sagres, Portugal (3 days)

This sport climbing course for beginners in Sagres, in the beautiful region of Algarve in southern Portugal, is perfect for those looking to venture themselves into rock climbing for the first time. It is also ideal for climbers looking to make the transition from indoor to outdoor climbing.

The Algarve is Portugal’s premier tourist destination, boasting sunny weather, great beaches and surfing options. Sagres, located on the southwest tip of Portugal, offers hundreds of routes and cliffs along the coast.

We will be climbing on the superb rock of the Cape St.Vincent area in Sagres. Every day, after breakfast at 8.30 we wil have an hour of rope practice at the lodge. Then we will take you to the climbing venue, trying to make the most out of daylight hours for climbing. We will provide you with a packed lunch and guide you all along the routes.

Our goal is to provide you with the basic skills and knowledge you need to confidently climb on different routes. The course will cover the following topics:

• Use of ropes, belay devices and quickdraws

• Basic equipment use and maintenance

• Belaying, from bottom, top

• Safety and rescue.

• Top rope climbing

• Lead belaying

• Tying off anchors

• Safe lower off basic movement technique

We usually finish the climbing day at about 3-5 o’clock. Then we will have time to enjoy the evening in this beautiful region in Portugal.We can have a drink in the village or at our lodge, going over the climbing day, analysing your progress, suggesting improvements and planning the itinerary for the following day. We often play climbing videos after dinner to learn more about types of climbing and skills.
