Cerro El Brujo, or The Sorcerer, is a majestic volcanic dome near the town of Santa Maria Coatepec in the state of Puebla, Mexico.
El Brujo is a beautiful asymmetrical cinder cone with its craters and summit at 2,930 m.a.s.l., at its southern tip. Ascending from this side is quite easy, allowing an elevation gain of over 400 meters within 1 hour of hiking. But there are other areas we can climb it from, like its northern slopes, which provide a gentle ascent too. And it is the perfect training for the nearby peaks like Pico de Orizaba, Nevado de Colima or Iztaccihuatl.
Due to its unique terrain known as malpais or badland, which consists in debris flows, lava and even recent ash, it is not suitable for agriculture. However, this has allowed it to maintain its original ecosystem of grassland, as well as pine and oak woods.
Reaching this marvellous place is easy. From Mexico City or the city of Puebla you can head to San Salvador el Seco and then Santa María Coatepec. Then, once we arrive to El Brujo the route we’ll follow is pretty straight forward. And when we reach its upper parts, we’ll find multiple ways to its summit.
Finally, at the top of El Brujo, we’ll encounter a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, along with a Mexican flag. The views we will get from here are simply breathtaking and will make all our effort worth it.
