Nauhcampatépetl also known as Cofre de Perote (4,250 m) is an extinct volcano in Veracruz. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to reach the summit of Mexico’s eight highest peak!
This majestic mountain is located where the Sierra Madre Oriental joins the Cordillera Neovolcanica. Its name cofre, means chest or box in english. And it comes from the shape of the peak which looks like a treasure chest. However, its original name Nauhcampatépetl comes from the indigenous language nahuatl, which means four sided mountain.
Cofre de Perote lies in the Cofre de Perote National Park with more than 11,700 ha. This dazzling park was established in 1937 as a way to protect the area. Also, it is very close to other magnificent and iconic mountains in the country, such as Citlaltépetl or Pico de Orizaba. Thus, it is often overlooked. But, once you reach its summit, you’ll understand why it is one of our favorite ascents!
Reaching the top of this peak is a pleasant hike that crosses an enchanting pine forest. Due to its location, it offers hypnotizing views of the surrounding volcanoes. Furthermore, it is the perfect way to acclimatize and prepare for bigger ascents nearby.
