The Gastein Valley is one of the best area in Austria for ski touring and backcountry skiing enthusiasts. Why not going together away from the busy Austrian pistes and enjoy the wild and pristine nature through one or several days of ski touring?! There is nothing better than winter landscapes and the unspoilt nature you find in this part of the Alps, close to Salzburg!

Great backcountry skiing spots include Kalkbretterkopf, Ankogel, the Gadaunerer Hochalm, the Kreuzkogel… I particularly like the ski tour to the Kalkbretterkopf. You can enjoy there awesome views of the mountain peaks of the Gastein valley, the Goldberg and Ankogel range.

I can take both beginners and more experienced skiers. I will adapt the itinerary and the program based on your level, your wishes and the weather & snow conditions.

About the Guide

I’m from Austria (Europe) and live in the Gastein-Valley next to Salzburg. Since 1996 I’m a UIAGM / IVBV professional mountain guide. In 2000 I graduated as a ski instructor.
My last 20 years I was working as mountain guide in all different parts of the Alps, in all seasons. In winter I work for different ski schools as ski instructor in Austria and Switzerland. Since a couple of years i am guiding as well in New Zealand. Furthermore I`m working in several education teams like the Austrian Mountain Guide Association as a coach, and also in the Austrian Skiing Instructor Association, specialized for alpine courses.
I was member of two Himalaya expeditions in 1997 and 2004. I have been climbing on Cho Oyu and Broad Peak .
My big passion is rock and ice climbing.

What People Say about Gernot Lachmaier

The trip was rushed, and unfortunately the guide was impatient and at times I felt that he didn’t want to
be there - which made the trip unenjoyable. The positives were, No doubt he is vey experienced, I have learnt a lot from him and was thankful for things he have shown me.
Chloe Ong for The grand traverse Glocknerwand to Grossglockner
I had a great time. The warm weather made challenging to find ice, but Gernot found us a fun and
exciting pillar. He gave me lots of good tips to help me improve my technique. I would definitely recommend the Bad Gastein area for ice climbing.
