Description

I will guide you on this day-long hike around Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic, the largest lake in the Caribbean and the largest crocodile reserve in the America’s, as we explore and discover the distinctive and unique climate and landscape around us, whilst also admiring the astonishing array of flora and fauna that live in the area, close by to the town of Paraiso.

Lake Enriquillo and its surrounds is an extremely interesting place, as not only is it the driest spot in the entire Caribbean but most of the vegetation around it is cactus, meaning there is a true melting pot of species that exist around it such as crocodiles, iguanas, scorpions and birds.

We will meet in Paraiso in the morning, and from there we head off straight to the lake. Once at the lake we have ample time to watch the many crocodiles that inhabit the lake, with many laying their eggs in the region, ensuring that plenty are around at all times.

It is then time to explore one of the Taino caves of the area, a well-preserved and sacred place for the Taino Indians who lived here hundreds of years ago.

We then refresh and relax by going for a swim (far away from the crocodiles!) in a naturally sulphureted water pool, a tranquil and idyllic place that is also excellent for your skin.

The unique location of the lake, 30 metres below sea level and in an extremely dry climate, has resulted in such a cross-section of odd and different species of flora and fauna co-habiting together.

We finish our adventure by heading back to Paraiso at the end of the day, thrilled at having discovered and seen such a magnificently idiosyncratic part of the Dominican Republic.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
