Welcome or Fáilte (Scottish Gaelic) to Inverness and the Scottish Highlands. This mysterious and captivating landscape is the perfect setting to head out into nature and learn valuable navigation skills!
This will be a structured day on the hills were you can learn or brush up on the essential tenants of navigation to confidently explore the Scottish hills.
Specifically I will cover:
“Setting” or orientating the map
Interpreting contours
Keeping track of how far you’ve walked: timing and pacing
Using the compass appropriately
Putting it all together: a system for success!
We will meet at 08:30 close to Inverness and we’ll begin with an orientation practice using 1:10,000 scale maps which allows a lot of practice in a short time period.
Next we will head to the pretty hills near Inverness using a more standard 1:25,000 scale map.
The course will finish at about 17:00 and we will be off the hills before nightfall.
You don’t need to be exceptionally fit to undertake this course but some experience hillwalking and some basic map reading skills are required e.g. symbols, following paths etc.
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to navigate yourself in the great outdoors and do so in gorgeous natural landscapes, then this course is for you. Sign up now!
If you’d like a longer course then consider joining me on this 2-day navigational skills course near Inverness where you will be awarded with the NNAS (National Navigation Award Scheme) Bronze Award!
