The Rila mountains are a vast, heavily forested, and extremely beautiful range in Bulgaria. And during the winter season, when blanketed by fluffy white snow, the range is even more impressive. Thus why I believe this 3 day snowshoeing tour is perfect for anybody hoping to not only explore, but to appreciate this amazing collection of peaks.
As a result of the vastness and immensity of the Rila mountains, there is a lot of ground to cover during the tour. Hence why participants should be in good physical condition. They should also have some previous snowshoeing experience as well because at times the conditions can be challenging. However, if you meet the criteria, you are definitely in for a winter treat.
The tour itself will provide you with a dizzying amount of views and sights. The landscape itself seems endless. And when you add in the peaks you will get to admire and even scale, you can't go wrong. Another wonderful highlight of the trip is the amazing Skakavista waterfall, which you will get to see in a state of perfect suspended animation.
In addition to the frozen Skakavitsa waterfall, you will also get to see the Seven Rila lakes and the Zelini Rid Ridge. And finally, at the end of the tour, you will get to relax in the piping hot thermal springs in the village of Sapareva Banya.
Exploring the Rila mountains anytime of the year is a special experience. However, exploring them in the winter adds another dimension to it. You will not only get to appreciate the blanket of snow during the day, but also at night, from the huts where you will sleep, as the moonlight reflects of its surface.

Itinerary
Day 1: Skakavitsa hut and waterfall
For the first day of this adventure, we will begin from Panitshishte-Zelini Preslop, which is only one and a half hours from Sofia, and make our way to the Skakavitsa hut, where you will have the opportunity to see and explore the nearby skakavitsa frozen waterfall. Afterwards, we will make our way to the Rila Lakes hut, where we will spend the night.
Day 2: Ivan Vazov hut
On the second day of this adventure, we will spend approximately 4 hours snowshoeing to the Ivan Vazov hut, where we will spend the night. There is an array of different areas and summits in the area, and you will have the chance to spend most of the day picking which one you would like to explore and scale.
Day 3: Zelini Rid Ridge
On the final day of this adventure, we will make our way back to the starting point, but not before passing by the beautiful Zelini Rid Ridge. Once we reach the point from which the trip started, you will have the chance to enjoy the hot thermal springs in the village of Sapareva Banya before heading back to Sofia, and making your way home or wherever else your travels take you!
