Come see the famous “cave of the ice stalagmites” on this fun snowshoeing trip in Otaki with us! Located in south-west Hokkaido in Japan, this cave is home to numerous sharp, translucent pillars.
The trip promises an exceptional half-a-day where you will walk leisurely through the forest in your snowshoes. It is an excellent way to experience Japanese winter. As you’ll slide down natural snow slopes, you’ll hear delightful bird-songs and sound of gushing streams.
The tour runs from mid-January to late March, depending upon the climate. The whole activity takes about 3 hours, so, you will have ample time to enjoy. You’ll walk on snow-blanketed paths to reach the cave, where your feet will go quite deep into powder snow. Once you reach there, it will be fun to see all these sharp crystal stalagmites and stalactites of varied heights cropping from the base and the ceiling.
It will be freezing out there, so make sure you wear long boots and several layers of warm clothes. It is best to bring your own equipment, but in case you don’t have one, we’ll provide you with free rental equipment.
Otaki is relatively unexplored and is strikingly beautiful. An easy two-hour drive from the big airport of Sapporo New Chitose brings you to this spectacular place.
