What should I know about Kyrgyzstan?
Two large and imposing mountain ranges – the Tian Shan and Pamir mountains – dominate Kyrgyzstan’s landscape and are an inextricable part of its culture. Known as the Land of Celestial Mountains, the country is home to some of the world’s highest peaks outside Himalaya. Anciently on the famous Silk Road that connected China to the Mediterranean, Kyrgyzstan’s rich history is still a part of its present. Visit the huge bazaar in the southern city of Osh if you have the time! Karakol, on the Issyk Kul Lake, is also worth a visit.
Why should I choose Kyrgyzstan for my adventure?
The natural beauty
There is no shortage of it in Kyrgyzstan - pristine mountain landscapes abound around here. Think imposingly high mountains and rolling pastures that will take your breath away in more than one way.
The great climbs
Mountains over 7000m like Lenin Peak and Khan Tengri have been gaining in popularity among Westerners. Not overly technical, they are an excellent choice for intermediate/advanced mountaineers.
The rich nomadic culture
With the yurt as its most famous icon, nomadic culture is still alive and well in Kyrgyzstan. The country even holds the “World Nomad Games”, a celebration of its millenia-old traditions.
What can I expect from the weather in Kyrgyzstan?
Expect cold winters and warm and sunny summers. It is usually cool up in the mountains, even during the summer months, but can get scorchingly hot at low altitude cities.
Getting here
Bishkek´s Manas International Airport is the most popular entry point to the country.
Which language is predominantly spoken in Kyrgyzstan?
Kyrgyz
What’s the country code of Kyrgyzstan?
+996
What currency is accepted in Kyrgyzstan?
Soms
What’s the high season in Kyrgyzstan?
July to September is the best time to visit if you are planning on going on a trek or have a specific mountaineering goal in mind. The winter months (December to March) are less popular among tourists but great for skiing.

Anastasia was a great guide/instructor and has invaluable knowledge of this area. Enjoyed every moment and learned a lot.
Alexey was beyond our expectations! He was extremely friendly throughout the whole 10 days, super professional, and very attentive. He was very flexible about the program, both due to weather conditions and our requests, in a way that made sure we covered all the content we expected to cover. From the moment we met, Alexey was eager to help us preparing for our course (even in the day before the course started). He also helped us a lot with planning the rest of our stay in Kyrgyzstan after the course ended. Once we got to the hut (where the course took place) it was immediately clear the Alexey is a true local expert, who knows every route and every possible complication and how to make sure we were all safe all the time. The reason for the 3 stars review on Explore-share service rating is that it was a bit complicated to pay for the course (1 star) and that the details of the course were unclear (regarding itinerary and prices of the small stuff- food, accommodations, included gear etc.- 1 star). But we are definitely happy with the outcome!

I would highly recommend Anastasia! I had an amazing trip to Ala Archa with Anastasia during spring 2019. She is an excellent guide, very professional, have a lot of knowledge and you can really feel her passion for being in the mountains. Furthermore she is easy to be around and you can sense the hospitality. My next trip in Kyrgyzstan will definitely be with her again

Superb trip. Pavel was unavailable for this trip so his wife Anastasia, also part of KMGA, was my guide. She was as friendly as she was professional, taking safety very seriously with avalanche training and digging of snow pits forming part of the trip. I would highly recommend her as a guide. The trip itself was excellent - we were very lucky with the weather and snow conditions. The hut is very interesting, though if you are one for creature comforts this is not the place for you. My only other warning to future participants is that you need a good level of physical fitness to take part in this trip. The hike up is long and sustained, a mixture of hiking and skinning depending on snow conditions. The touring itself was as you would expect - we covered around 1,000m vertical per day but this can vary depending on energy and conditions etc. All in all a brilliant trip. 5* well deserved. Ed
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
