Come with us to **Romania**‘s stunning mountains as we go in search of awesome powder. Together with one of our experienced guides, you’ll get explore the best of the **Făgăraș Mountains.**

The **Făgăraș** are part of the vast **Carpathian** Mountains and are the highest peaks in this range. They get great annual snowfall and are a skier’s paradise.

This ski tour experience is aimed at skiers who have at least an **intermediate level** and who are comfortable going **off-piste.**

We’ll start by taking a cable car high into the mountains to our accommodation. We’ll base ourselves in a  hut over the following days as we explore the slopes of **Parangul peak.** After that, we’ll move to another area to discover the **Retezat Mountains** and finally, we’ll head to the **Valley of the Lady** and the **Valley of Balii.**

Along the way, your guide will be able to share their knowledge of these mountains and also help you with your technique.

On your first day we’ll pick you up at the airport and bring you to Petrosani. We’ll check over the gear then jump on the cable car to our first place of accommodation.

Arrival 

We’ll devote our second and third day to exploring the beautiful Parangul Mountains and get in some great off-piste skiing on pristine snow. At the end of day three we’ll move on to our next accommodation spot in the Retezat peaks.

Parangul Mountains 

Day four will be all about the Retezat Mountains. The Bucura area will provide us with awesome snow and great nature.

Retezat

On day 5 we’ll transfer to Făgăraș and ski the fantastic Valley of the Lady and the Valley of Balii. Then on the sixth day we’ll explore the Vaiuga Valley.

 Făgăraș 

We’ll say our goodbyes on the last day and leave you back at the airport.

The **Fagaras Mountains** (2,544m) are the highest mountains of the **Southern Carpathians** – also known as the Transylvanian Alps -, in Romania. These are the second highest group of mountains in the **Carpathian** **Range** (2,655m), which extends over 1,500 kilometers across Central and Eastern Europe, making it the second largest range in Europe, after the Scandinavian Mountains.

Our trip will depart from Balea Cascada cable car station, on the **Balea Valley**, up to our hotel in the glacial **Balea Lake** at 2,034 meters of altitude. The following morning, and during 4 days, we will ski deep powder snow, down the Fagaras Mountains’ wild slopes, across beautiful snow-capped virgin forests.

**Our daily traveling distance will be of around 1,000 meters**. However, we can tailor the tour to the group’s level and preferences.

Group meeting at the Balea Cascada cable car station to go over the equipment. We will take the cable car to Balea Lake and check in at the hotel. We will review the fundamentals of avalanche awareness and companion rescue. We will close the day with some easy runs.

If snow conditions permit it, we will send our luggage down the mountain by cable car and ski all the way down to the parking lot. If conditions are not favorable, at 4PM we will take the cable car down to Balea Cascada. Optional group dinner at the old city of Sibiu, one of the most important cultural centers of Romania.

The Fagaras Mountains aontain some spectacular peaks in Romania, home to some of the loftiest, iciest and highest alpine mountains.

Generous coatings of snow layer the slopes and valleys of the Romanian mountains.

We begin by catching the cable car from Balea Cascada, one of the most spectacular and biggest waterfalls in Romania. We’ll get off at Balea Lake, where we base ourselves for the coming action-packed days.

The Fagaras Mountains offers wide variety of slopes capable for beginners as much as advanced skiers. And so depending on the group’s level of ability, as well as weather and slope conditions, we’ll choose the safest and most fun slopes available.

If conditions allow it, we can send the luggage down by cable car before we ski all the way to the bottom. Or if conditions do not allow us, then we will take the cable car down to the bottom.

Even if complicated this is the last place from where we could have a chance to source forgotten or misplaced items. After the gear check we will take the cable car to Balea Lake where we will check in at the hotel. This day is dedicated to reviewing basic winter risk awareness and avalanche search and rescue. We will close the day with some easy runs.

After breakfast we will go out for a first tour. Depending on snow, weather and slope conditions we will choose one of the popular day trip options. We can tailor the tour to the group level and strengths. We can cater for both longer or shorter days as well. Overnight at hotel.

After breakfast we will go out for our final tour. If snow conditions will allow it we can arrange so the luggage is sent down by cable car and we can ski all the way down to the parking lot. If the snow conditions will not allow then we need to be ready to catch the cable car at 16:00. We can have dinner in Sibiu or we can part ways at Balea cascada.

Ski touring in Romania, 5 days in the Fagaras Mountains

I invite you to join me for a great 6-day backcountry skiing trip in Romania, exploring the **Bucegi Mountains**, the  spectacular **Fagaras Mountains** and the **Retazat Mountains.** 

The Fagaras are **the highest peaks of the Southern Carpathians** range -also known as the Transylvanian Alps- and they are a famous skiing destination. During the winter season, this **stunning alpine environment** offers many ski touring possibilities, both for intermediate and experienced skiers, departing from the **Balea Cascada** cable car station.

For a 6-day backcountry skiing trip in Romania, a combination of **Bucegi Mountains** (1 day), **Fagaras** (3 days) and **Retezat Mountains** (2 days)  would be ideal, but our itinerary will depend on the conditions at the time of your trip. From the airport we would transfer to Sinaia, a town and mountain resort close to the Bucegi Mountains, before heading to the Fagaras. **You can check the tentative day-by-day itinerary below** and check more options on the Extra Info box.

We always dedicate the first day to **reviewing basic winter risk awareness, avalanche search and rescue**, before heading out into the backcountry. We will close the first day with some easy runs to figure out the level of the group.

The **Retezat Mountains** are also part of the South Carpathians and they are another great backcountry skiing destination. However, as they are not too high, good snow conditions are not always guaranteed here. In that case we would spend the 6 days in the Fagaras, where good conditions are always guaranteed.

The best time for this trip would be March, as the weather is quite stable, snow is usually good and settled, allowing the perfect conditions for a great backcountry skiing trip.

During this trip, we will be staying at mountain huts in Retezat and in a 3-star hotel when we are in the Fagaras Mountains.

Arrival in Bucharest or other airport (like Targu Mures, Cluj Napoca or Sibiu). Transfer to Sinaia, overnight at hotel. I can charter a transport or you can arrange that by yourselves. Very early arrival in Bucharest and early transfer to Sinaia will allow you to visit Peles Castle (early afternoon closure). We can meet late in the evening at the hotel.

Easy warm up day on slope and then off-piste, chairlift assisted. We will have an avalanche rescue refresher and maybe a bit of touring if we still have time, all in the Sinaia – Busteni area. Overnight at hotel in Sinaia.

Sinaia-Bucegi Mountains

We transfer to Balea early in the morning and take the cable car. Check in at hotel in Balea and then set out on a tour on the first day. On Days 3 and 4 we also enjoy ski touring day trips with overnights at Balea.

Fagaras Mountains - Balea

We take the cable car back down and then drive to the Retezat Mountains. We then hike and ski to the hut (self catered one – better location or catered one); overnight at hut.Day 6: (Retezat Mountains) ski tour then overnight at hut

Retezat Mountains

Today we could enjoy  another ski tour and overnight at hutor descend back and transfer to town. It is unlikely that you can catch a flight today, except in the evening.
