**The stunning Carros de Foc (chariots of fire) is located in the Spanish Pyrenees. It is part of the renowned Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.** In summer, it is a great place for trekking. In winter, it’s a beautiful route for ski touring! Of course, it is important to go with a guide that knows the way well and that can help out with logistics. **On this 5-Day Carros de Foc Skiing Trip I will show you this stunning region** as we practice this exhilarating winter sport!

**The Carros de Foc route links 9 mountain huts in the National Park.** On our 5 day excursion we will be staying in a few of them and just passing by others. All of the huts are nestled in beautiful landscapes. Availability and hut reservation policies will determine which ones we sleep. Furthermore, throughout our journey you will also be able to try the delicious traditional cuisine. And, **during the day, as we move from one landmark to the next on our skis, we will go through forests, down mountains and by dazzling lakes.** Therefore, this is a trip you will remember both for the skiing and the beauty of the surrounding environment! Make sure you bring a camera!

In terms of difficulty, prior skiing experience is necessary. Also, a good fitness level is important. Because we will be skiing five days straight for several hours a day, you need to be well prepared. Of course, I will be there every step of the way to help and guide you. As a result, **you will be able to ski down the best snow spots in the region, and safely**!

From Pont de Ressec we will ascend through a forest to get the Restanca hut. After provisioning, we will continue to reach the Güellcrestada’s Col. We can also ascend the Montardo summit (2.833 m) if we are up to it. Then, we will get to the Ventosa and Calvell hut and make a multi phase descent due to the many “ibones” (Pyrenees lakes) on the way.

Required. Elevation gain +1.050 m.  – 300 m descent.

Ascending the Montardo. Elevation gain + 1350 m – 650 m descent.

Campamento Ressec (1.400 m) - Restanca hut (2010m) - Güellcrestada’s Col (2.450 m) - Optional Montardo (2.833 m) - Ventosa and Calvell hut (2.200 m)

We will kick off the day by descending to the Ibones of Colieto. After placing sealskins on, we will ascend the Contraix’s Col. Finally, we will make an amazing and long descent towards the south in order to reach the valley bottom of Estany Llong. We will change the high mountain landscape for forests surrounded by big mountains. The Estany Llong hut is located in this valley, far away from the civilization so it’s an ideal place to relax.

Potential ascent to Contraix’s Summit.

Elevation gain +810 m.  – 950 m descent.

Ventosa and Calvell hut (2.200m) - Contraix Col (2.747m) - Estany Llong hut (1.985m).

We will enter the south part of the Aigües Tortes and San Mauricio National Park. It is a less frequented area dotted with “Ibones” where it is possible to reach one of the summits in the area.

Elevation gain +850 m.  – 500 m descent.

Estany Llong hut (1.985m) - Gavatxos Col (2.666m) - Colomina hut (2.395m)

We will start of with a stunning ascent of the  Peguera Summit. Then, we will aim for the Sant Maurici Lake and the area where the Amitges hut is located.

It is a difficult route with abrupt up and down transitions and we will ski to get to Sant Maurici Lake, with the lovely views of Els Encantats.

Required. Elevation gain +1.120 m.  – 1.140 m descent.

With the ascent to Peguera Summit. Elevation gain +1.370 m.  – 1.390 m descent.

Colomina’s hut (2.395m) -  Saburó’s Col (2.680 m)- Josep María Blanc hut (2.300 m)- Pico Peguera (2.942 m)-  Mallafré hut (1.950 m)- Amitges hut (2.378 m)

Our first goal of our last ski day will be the ascent to Tuc de Saboredo. From this point we will descend the homonymous valley to get to Còth deth Tuc Gran de Sendrosa. This col will be the entrance to the Aiguamòg Valley, where after a nice descent, we will find the Banhs de Tredós, at the end of our journey.

Elevation gain +1.150 m.  – 1.450 m descent.

Carros de Foc is a **mountaineering and ski touring route which connects the huts of the Aigüestortes National Park**, in Catalonia. It was opened in 1987 by the hut keepers, and over the years it has become a Pyrenees classic.

With **impressive over-3000m peaks and about 200 lakes**, the Aigüestortes i Estany of Saint Maurici National Park was created in 1955. It is in the comarques of Pallars Sobirà and Alta Ribagorça.

This region offers **top-quality powder snow** and a unique scenery with **huge granite walls and lush forests, as well as steep and wide slopes.** On this 4-day tour **we will climb and ski in the surroundings the** **Arties, Ventosa i Calvell, Amitges and Saboredo huts**. Then, at night, we will eat delicious food and rest in these charming refuges!

Follow me on this unforgettable ski tour of Carros de Foc in the Spanish Pyrenees! I will take you to some of the best untouched powder throughout the most scenic reaches of northern Spain as we traverse a classic circular tour in northern Catalonia.

Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park (St. Maurici) is the only Spanish national park in Catalonia. It has gorgeous alpine pastures and forests, and hidden within them are a plethora of mountain lakes.

Because of its location in the Pyrenees, there are various altitudes throughout the park that offer an equally diverse selection of nature. While the aesthetics can be pleasing all year round, it is perfect in winter.

The Carros de Foc circuit is home to some impressive summits, and the mountain huts dotting the backcountry add to the culture of the landscape. This translates to more intimate treks and adds the crucial ingredients for an epic snow country experience.

We will set out for Arties and then make our way to Montardo. We will finish the day at Ventosa i Calvell Hut (2,220m).

In the morning, we leave for Collado de Contraix. We will then see Gran Tuc de Colomers (2,933m), and finish the day at Estany Llong Hut.

This day we will traverse to Pic de Subenuix (2,950m) and the surrounding country. Our day ends at Amitges Hut.

Today we will explore Bassiero (2,904m) and Col del Lac Glacat, with some unbelievable views. The evening will be spent at the Saboredo Hut.

**Come and join me on this 5-day hut to hut ski tour in Carros de Foc.**

**Carros de Foc** is a great mountain traverse inside the **Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici National Park**. It is located in the heart of the **Pyrenees** in the Lérida province, western **Catalonia**.

Due to its amazing landscapes and excellent refuges facilities, Carros de Foc is one of the most famous ski tours of the Pyrenees. During this 5-day trip, you will appreciate two amazing ski runs between the **Aran Valley** and the **Ribagorza** region.

I will also guide you through the mountain refuges of **Ventosa i Calvell (2220 m)**, **Estany Llong (2000 m)**, **Amitges (2310 m)** and **Colomers (2100 m)**. These are four of the nine huts in Carros de Foc which are located between 1900 and 2400 meters of height. **You will find a more detailed itinerary of the tour below**.

Remember that **this is the classic hut-to-hut route**. You can also ask me for different ski touring options (more or less days) or even for other refuges to visit in the area. Also take into account that you will need some previous **experience in mountain skiing** if you want to join this ski tour.

We’ll go from Pont de Resec to the Ventosa hut (2220 m) with the possibility to ascend the Montardo summit (2833 m).

We’ll continue through the Carros de Foc route from the Ventosa hut trough the Collado de Contraix (2748 m), the highest point of the trip, until we reach the Estany llong refuge (1985 m).

We leave the hut and go through the Portarró de Espot (2427 m). On this day, we move to the Amitges refuge (2380 m).

We’ll continue our ski tour and slowly ascend to the Port de Ratera (2543 m). Then, our next stop will be the Colomers hut (2135 m).

We’ll return to the Pont de Resec, where this program ends.

### **Welcome to this** 5-day ski tour **during which we’ll visit the main huts inside the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.** 

**Carros de Foc** represents one of the most classic ski touring routes of the Pyrenees. It is a must see for all mountain lovers. The route is 55 km long with **an altitude change of 9,200 meters**, which gives us great descents options.

Carros de Foc is a surprisingly beautiful place surrounded by large granite walls and woods with green pines. That is why Carro de Foc and the whole Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park will allow us to enjoy the best lines, skiing from refuge to refuge, while admiring **one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Pyrenees**.

Every day will be a new beginning, in which we will look for the best ski descents and continue discovering all that Carros de Foc has for us. Please find at the bottom of this description, the complete day-by-day itinerary.

Departing from Arties we will skin up to the Restanca Hut at 2010 meters and then, ski to Ventosa Hut at 2220 meters. The total elevation gain of the day will be 715 meters in 4-5 hours. A possible summit where to go skiing is the Montardo, at 2833 meters above sea level.

From the Ventosa Hut we will ski down to the Estany Llong, at 1980 meters. Total skinning/skiing time of the day: 6 hours with an altitude change of 220 meters. Possible summit to ski: La Creu de Colomers (2896 m)

Ventosa Hut - Estany Llong Hut

Today we will visit the Colomina Hut (2395 m) and the Josep M. Blanc Hut (2350 m). Meters up: 870 and down: 500m (6 hours). Possible summits where to go for more ski: Pic de Mariolo (2856 m) and/or Pic dela Mainera (2904 m)

Estany Llong – Colomina Hut - Josep M. Blanc Hut

A 6-hour ski touring day from Josep M. Blanc to the Amitges Hut, at 2380 meters. Other possible summit to ski is the Pic Monestero, at 2877 meters above sea level.

From Amitges we will descend to the Colomers mountain hut (2135 m) and finally to Tredos (5-6 hours).  
Meters up: 400 / Meters down: 800. We can also go skiing to the Tuc de la Ratera (2863 m) or Tuc de la Gran Sendrosa (2703 m). End of the program.

Whether you think 5 days is too much or don't have the availability, this is a shorter version of **Carros de Foc itinerary**.

So, during this program, we'll devote ourselves to the northern area of **Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park**. This way we'll cut down the number of days**.** **But we'll still get to know the most interesting part of this beautiful national park!**

This magical route was created in 1987. A group of mountain hut keepers decided to go across the park visiting the other eight mountain huts. From then on, this route became more and more popular. Today it is one of the most popular routes in Europe. It is possible to travel around it in many different ways. In this occasion, we'll go through seven of the nine mythical mountain huts while enjoying the best ski runs in the park!

**Carros de Foc route** is a legendary route that traverses the **Aigües Tortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in Catalonia!**

Nobody knows how the name came up, but it has become one of the most popular routes in the **Pyrenees**. Furthermore, this **Carros de Foc route** travels across a majestic National Park. This wild mountain area has peaks over 3000 m of altitude and almost 200 lakes. And the itinerary is 55-km long with an accumulated elevation gain of 9.200 m.
