Iconic Pyrenees peak
The prominent shape of the Pic du Midi d’Ossau rises from the Ossau Valley in the French Pyrenees. Its steep and distinctive slopes culminate in its lofty reputation as a symbol of the French Pyrenees. And the mountain is fully protected within the Pyrenees National Park that spreads out across the French departments of Hautes-Pyrenees and Pyrenees-Atlantiques.
Picturesque alpine landscape
As part of the Ossau Valley, the surrounding lands have remained pastoral, with a rich bunch of flora and fauna that call the rugged terrain home. You will be able to see the bearded vulture who lives in the high mountains, as well as the tawny vulture, the marmot, and the classic Pyrenean chamois. Mountain climbing on the Pic du Midi D’Ossau presents picture-perfect backgrounds.
Rugged culture
The rugged region retains a traditional culture. Stone-built homes are fixed to the steep slopes, narrow cobbled streets line the tiny mountain villages, and trickling streams zigzag along the valley. The remotest villages still practice the local Occitan language, which is very distinct to French. The picturesque meadows are grazed by sheep, ponies and cattle, all wearing the iconic bells.
