The Tian Shan mountain range forms a dramatic backdrop around the southern skyline of Bishkek, guarding the Kyrgyz capital with its giant snow-covered peaks.
Only 40 kilometers south of Bishkek, the mountain range is home to the Ala Archa National Park.
With snow-covered peaks that soar past 4,000 meters, steep forested slopes, gushing rivers and alpine wildlife, the national park offers incredible natural beauty.
The park is also a magnet for rock climbers seeking out a fresh and rewarding challenge. Its quality rock, ice and mixed routes mean there is something for every type of climber. And there are more than 150 climbing routes of varying difficulty.
So join me on a week-long climbing adventure in the depths of nature that lies so close to the urban area, making it very accessible.
Some of the park’s most famous spots are the impressive gorge of the Ala Archa River and the Ak-Sai Glacier. Both of these offer spectacular terrain for rock climbing.
The name Ala Archa translates as variegated juniper, named after the plant that grows on its slopes.
The park is a top national destination with wide ranging activities past magnificent waterfalls and glaciers. It is the perfect place to train before big expeditions.
