Description

Surrounded by the Arctic ocean, the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in Iceland is a unique splitboarding destination and should rightly be on everyone’s bucket list.

Established in 1975, this area is located in the Westfjords, north west of Iceland. Considered one of the most remote places in Europe, skiers and splitboarders will fall in love with its magical pristine nature.

During this 6-day program, we will be based in the beautiful Kviar, an old abandoned farm. Every day, we’ll take the Bjarnarnes speedboat and search for the best powder snow and splitboarding spots. Then, every afternoon, we’ll return to our cozy and comfortable accommodation where delicious local food and a sauna will be waiting for us.

This program is suitable for advanced skiers and splitboarders. Our main goal will be to find the best snow every day and we will be able to choose different slopes to explore. Furthermore, if you have the time, I recommend that you stay an extra day in Ísafjörður since there are great splitboarding options in that area as well.

So, if you are up for this fun and exciting splitboarding trip , please contact me. I am sure that you will be amazed at the beauty of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve!

Itinerary

Day 1: First splitboarding day in Kvíar

We meet at Ísafjörður after lunch and we leave on the Bjarnarnes speedboat.

Then, we’ll go to Kvíar and search for the best powder snow before we go over some safety recommendations.

Be prepared (well fed and well dressed) before we start this first splitboarding day!

Finally, we will enjoy a well deserved dinner at the farmhouse.

Day 2: Lónafjörður Fjord

First, we’ll go to the head of Lónafjörður Fjord by boat. From there, we can either go to Rangali and ascend to Rangalaskarð Pass, or to Miðkjós and ascend to Snókur and Breiðuskarðahnjúkur. Then we return to Kvíar by boat. We can pick mussels from the beach to have as starters at dinner! There’s also a sauna to relax.

Day 3: Veiðileysufjörðu

On day 3 we’ll go on the big Zodiac to Veiðileysufjörðu.

My proposal is to ride over to Lónafjörður Fjord. Finally, we’ll finish in Rangali, and take the boat back to Kvíar.

Day 4: Hrafnfjörður

On day 4, we’ll explore the mountains in Hrafnfjörður, the Raven’s Fjord.

There are some great smooth runs all the way from the tops of the fjords. I particularly like the runs from the top of Hvítserkur and Mt. Bláfell. Also from the pass between Bláfell and Mt. Hattarfell. And if you are looking for a steep descent, we can go down the West face of Hattarfell.

Day 5: Mt. Tröllafell

We’ll start the day by taking the boat to Höfðaströnd Beach. Then, we’ll ascend to the top of Mt. Tröllafell, the Troll Mountain and find a mixture of steep couloirs and open runs.

Day 6: Ísafjörður

We’ll transfer by boat early to Ísafjörður and do some splitboarding near the town before ending the trip.
