Description

Put your splitboard on and come explore the natural wonders that Bariloche, has for you! I propose a fantastic 6 day winter program during which we will snowboard some of best backcountry spots in North Patagonia!

With the Nahuel Huapi Lake as backdrop, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Bariloche. The Cerro Catedral ski station and the Frey Valley are probably some of the most breathtaking places you will visit in this tour. In addition, Andean snow-capped peaks, deep blue lakes and cozy mountain lodges will make this trip a really memorable and unforgettable experience.

The best period to have a good splitboarding time is from July till September, when the snow conditions are optimal. Keep in mind that you need to be an expert splitboarder/snowboarder and be in very good physical condition. We must ascend steep slopes for several hours and then manage the descents with the proper technique.

As I was born and raised in Bariloche, I will make sure to take you to the wildest and most secret spots of Bariloche’s backcountry. You will discover a very popular winter destination in a way that only a local guide can offer.

Send your request and make your reservation now. I’ll be waiting for you!

And if you’re a skier I also lead a ski touring version of this program. Check it out here.

Everything about this trip was really great. Firstly explore-share was extremely helpful, really responsive. We felt really supported making all the arrangements from Netherlands to Argentina. Thanks for the team for that! In terms of the trip -- this was one of the most special trips we ever had. Huemel circuit is was very special. You start day1 in Patagonian forests and slowly ascend to the more rugged, stoney views of the circuit until you end up in the glaciers (and walk on them!) in day 2. Day 2 is slightly challenging due to the long ascend and walk until the camp. But without being very experienced we were able to do it (also thanks to our amazing guide Luis). We camped in an area only by ourselves, where it snowed overnight, which added to the majestic beauty of the whole trip. Day 3 mainly was descending to the 3rd camp area next to Viedma lake. This was also slightly challenging given the very steep descend in the forest, but despite the challenge it was fun, and was filled with great views. The reward is big, where Viedma lake is awaiting with glacier pieces floating on the lake just in front of you (and sometimes letting go some of it’s pieces). It’s a mesmerising area. And day 4 is going back to the start through next to the lakes, hares and guanakos. slightly easier trek but very peaceful, a nice goodbye to the circuit. We were picked up by a car at the end, arranged by Merlin/Luis. In all days, we were flabbergasted by the ruggedness and beauty of Patagonian mountains, glaciers, forests, lakes and everything we've seen. We were mainly alone in the circuit -- at least in the direction we were doing there was no one else with us. In that sense it was extra special. Our guide Luis was one of the main reasons for why this trip was so special. Very experienced and friendly -- made us feel really comfortable in what we were doing through his guidance on technical moves (e.g. in traverses, when we are descending etc). Also very experienced in the area, knew the circuit step by step - gave us a lot of information on the story of the geography not just like a guide but like a scientist almost (he was full of knowledge for this space). It was obvious that he really loves these lands and mountains, it was great to experience this route with him. I never write reviews, but this was a great trip on all levels, and want to make sure anyone who sees the review doesn’t doubt and just goes for it. Thank you Luis, Merlin and explore share - for your friendliness, professionalism and love of nature. You definitely added an incredible memory to our minds. I highly recommend everyone to experience Huemel Circuit with Luis and Merlin. Gulcin and Sebastiaan

Could not recommend both Merlin and his touring itineraries more. He went above and beyond from guiding us to lines I will never forget to showing us how an asado is done to renting me his *personal* skis for 2 weeks to make sure I had the best equipment for the adventure. He’s not like other guides I’ve had before, pushing us to get the most rewarding experience possible. Already looking forward to the next adventure.

Merlin was an exceptional guide - safety first & lots of instruction. Climbed about 10 sport routes with him from 5.8 to 5.9. The rock was great, route choices great! What could be better than rock climbing with Fitz Roy looming in the background! Merlin’s professionalism added to the experience. Oh & he will take you to eat lunch at the best empanadas in town :) I will return to Chaltén & Merlin has earned my trust to go into the big mountains and do a multi day ascent!

Booking with explore-share was so easy, Lupe was fantastic and despite it being so close to my trip date, very helpful and extremely responsive. Merlin was the perfect guide: knowledgeable, competent, patient, motivating and upbeat. We had snow on the ascent of Madsen but the clouds cleared for really excellent views of Piedras Blancas glacier, the valley below, and Fitz Roy. Thanks for the highlight of an incredible two weeks in Patagonia!

I have been fortunate enough to visit El Chalten twice this year. The first time was with friends and we used Mountaineering Patagonia to climb Cerro Madsen. The weather was terrible, but the experience could not have been better. This winter though, I took my parents down and we signed up for Paso Del Cuadrado. We were joking today that it was the best hike we have ever been on. The guides (Martin and Max) met us the night before to check gear and go over the route. They were very good at explaining every detail. They met us the next morning with hot coffee and even better attitudes. As my mother put it, they set the perfect pace as we climbed 4000 vertical feet over 7 miles. I repeat the trip could not have been better. We made it to the pass with ease, never feeling out of control or unsafe. Bottom line: I am going to keep coming back to El Chalten and every time I will visit Merlin and his staff and go on one of their hikes. You would be foolish to not go with them.

Merlin and his team worked with us to customize our trip to ensure we had an amazing time during our week in El Chalten. We completed a fantastic trek and climbed Cerro Madsen. The changeable weather in Patagonia means that you need to be flexible and Merlin's suggestions and his willingness to tailor his services to suit the conditions really enhanced our experience. The friendly, experienced and knowledgeable guides ensured we always felt safe and secure even when operating outside our comfort zone!

Thank you Merlin for the amazing experience!

Merlin helped us plan the experience from start to finish, working around weather, ability, timeframes, and stuff we wanted to see to make for an awesome trip. When we had gear issues, he helped us find replacements, even lending us some of his own. He's totally professional, very experienced, and loves to have fun! I'll be contacting him next time I go climbing in the area.

We came to El Chalten late season (mid to late May) and wandered into Merlin's office hoping to find an open climbing guide. We discussed options with him given the upcoming weather and our abilities and ended up doing a day of sport climbing and a day of mountaineering on Cerro Madsen. Through both adventures he was knowledgeable, friendly, and safe. He encouraged us through the entire climb and even brought some treats for the top. I would highly recommend Mountaineering Patagonia if you are in search of a guide.

I was fortunate enough to have two full-day hikes including Laguna de los Tres and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, respectively. Merlin came to the lodge the day before the hike to provide an overview of the hikes and answer any questions I may have. The next day, we started out early to beat the crowd. Merlin picked me up at 7:30 am and drove me to El Pilar lodge, where Pablo and I started the hike up to Laguna de los Tres. Although both hikes can be done without a guide, having a professional guide who knows the geology, flora and fauna, as well as the history of the area made the experience so much more rich and enjoyable. Despite the sunny day forecasted, the day turned out to be misty and cloudy. For me, it added to the beautiful mysterious aura of the mountain, made the orange & red leaves of the lengas even brighter. We only got a glimpse of the laguna at the top when the mist shifted for a few seconds, but the whole experience was quite magical. The second day did turn out to be sunny, and provided a spectacular view of the glacial and the laguna at the top of Loma del Pliegue Tumbado. Neither of the hikes were technical, but required a good steady rhythm and stamina since they averaged about 20km each. Pablo who guided the hikes both days was incredibly patient, encouraging, and loved sharing his insights and the history of the area and the culture. I highly recommend Merlin, and if I were lucky enough to return, I would gladly hire him again.

Our day trip up Cerro Madsen was amazing! There was a chance of rain in the afternoon of our trip so Merlin and team made accommodations for us to leave early in the morning to try to beat the storm and we were so happy they did. We were able to beat the rain by hiking in the morning and made the ascent up to the top of Cerro Madsen. Our guide was superb at understanding our skill level and pushing us accordingly! I would highly suggest using Mountaineering Patagonia. They are professional, provide you with some of the gear needed, and make sure you have a safe trip. Thanks Merlin!

Our initial arrangement with Merlin involved a 2.5 ascent of Cerro Solo. However, bad weather on what would have been the summit day sunk that plan - fortunately Merlin was extremely up to date on the weather forecast, and turned up at our hostel (only about an hour after we got into El Chalten) to propose an alternative plan: that we ascend Cerro Electrico (similar height but short approach) and then spend the next two days at lower altitude rock climbing.   This turned out beautifully. We had a fantastic ascent of Cerro Electrico, with Merlin a very conscientious and confident guide, educating us on glacier work and axe skills. The views were fantastic and the weather superb. Upon descending (after a tough 12 hour day), Merlin took us straight to a favourite pub for happy hour.   The next two days we spent rock climbing (there are some fantastic multi-pitch routes 5 minutes walk out of el Chalten). Throughout we felt very well taken care of, and particularly enjoyed Merlin's exposition of life in el Chalten - going to his favourite places for lunch and afternoon coffee and feeling wonderfully included in the life of this brilliant little town.   100% recommended. Merlin was also very helpful in planning our trip on the Huemul circuit, which we completed after our time in el Chalten.

We went for a 1.5-day ascent to Mojon Rojo, which is highly recommended as a technically easy but hugely rewarding summit. Merlin is an excellent guide, he will keep your spirits high and make sure he shares the right amount of local knowledge. He's technically very skilled and will always operate in the safest way. Excellent food and good vibes, too!

My wife & I had an absolutely amazing experience climbing Cerro Madsen. We were put in touch with Merlin through Explore-Share & he was really accommodating in helping us plan the experience & chose a mountain that best suited our capabilities. Merlin, thank you for being so patient with us & answering about a thousand questions from me. You were always extremely helpful, friendly & flexible with us.   Also, a massive thank you to our guide, Sebastian, for taking us to the top of Cerro Madsen. Sebastian is a truly phenomenal guide & mountaineer. He is an extremely capable, knowledgeable, friendly & encouraging person who made us overcome all the obstacles to reach the summit. His constant motivation & encouragement made us overcome our own shortcomings / limitations & drove us all the way to the top without ever compromising our safety.   It was an absolutely breathtaking & out of this world experience & I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending it to anyone looking for a similar adventure. We had a BLAST skiing Cerro Vespignani with Merlin! He made a great call on going to Cerro Vespignani with the uncertain weather we had. While the winds were high during the start of the day they settled down and allowed us to summit and ski the whole mountain. Despite the late season dates (November 12) Merlin was psyched to take us skiing. His knowledge of the area really paid off and turned this day to an unforgettable one! I highly recommend visiting Mountaineering Patagonia and having Merlin as your guide to whatever adventures haunt your mind!

Our group had an amazing experience skiing Cerro Vispignani with Merlin. Merlin made a great call having Vispignani for our ski venue objective. He has a wealth of local knowledge that provides for the best experience and for safety. Also Merlin is a very personable guide and a lot of fun to be with in the mountains. I highly recommend paying him a visit at Mountaineering Patagonia. I look forward to having more guided adventures with then in future

My boyfriend and I did a 4 day mountaineering trip with Merlin. Because of the unstable weather in Patagonia we had to divide the 4 days, but Merlin was really flexible and great at organizing everything. The first day we did a mountain/glacier ascent to Cerro Eléctrico. It was a long and hard 12 hour day, but a fantastic ascent! The next two days we went up to Piedra Negra were we sat up camp, and then we did Paso del Cuadrado the first day and Paso Guillaumet the second. The view from both passes was incredible! It was our first time using crampons, ice ax etc and we were really eager to learn as much as possible. Merlin was a great guide and explained a lot during the expeditions. Back in Chaltén he also gave us a half day course in glacier travel (because we had to cut the trip short due to bad weather), showing us how to use the ropes etc to get out of a crevasse. We had a great time with Merlin and would really recommend going with Mountaineering Patagonia!

I got in touch with Merlin well in advance (strongly recommend to) to prepare an alpine ascent in Fitz Roy area. Merlin and Jaun were really fantastic in the support. We had several chat while I was still back home to assess experience, gears, possible alternatives in case of bad weather. I found everything managed in a very professional, friendly and safe way, both down in the village and during the climb. Really fantastic! Thanks a lot!

Muchas gracias.

A big thanks to Merlin for organizing and guiding two unforgettable ascents during my trip to el Chalten! Merlin was very responsive and helpful ahead of the trip, sending me route ideas and answering all sorts of gear questions of a Patagonia novice! During the ascents themselves Merlin was extremely professional, helpful... and great fun! (and he always arranged delicious packed lunches for Day1 :)) I would totally recommend Merlin for any mountaineering ascents in Patagonia, in the Alps or anywhere else! I felt safe at all times and had an unforgettable time!

We went with Merlin to attempt to scale Guillaumet. Merlin was a great guide and was super flexible. We didn't make it to the summit because of weather, and so he took us rock climbing around el chalten instead. If I went back, I'd definitely go with him again.

Unser absolutes Highlight in Patagonien.

Had a really amazing time on this trek. Most credit to our very knowledgeable guide Juan, his assistant Matthias who was also a good cook and porters Waco and Patto. The trip was very well organized, and we learned a lot from being hands on as far as pitching and taking down our own tents. The views were amazing and everyday had something different to offer. Would definitely recommend Mountaineering Patagonia to anyone who wants see the beauty of Patagonia. Would love to do the Southern Ice field someday with the same company

I just returned from an incredibly memorable and exciting trip from Patagonia, the highlight being the 6 day Base Camps trek with Mountaineering Patagonia. The trip was well organized, the food was amazing (I think we all gained weight somehow despite the long days of hiking) and the guides were wonderful-particularly our lead guide Juan. If you're looking for an adventurous outdoor experience with a team that truly knows and loves the area I highly recommend them. The experience could not have been better. Thank you Merlin, Juan & the rest of Mountaineering Patagonia for an incredible time!

I spent 5 amazing days doing some ski touring in the Fitz Roy region !! To some extent, the landscape is comparable to Chamonix Mont Blanc but this is much much wilder !!! You can really feel the nature. There is no one else in the mountain... everything just for you !! This is an incredible feeling which is not easy to have in Europe. On top of that, Merlin is a really good guide and a very nice guy. Everything was very well organized. I highly recommend this trip to all ski touring lovers.

We had two day trips ski touring in El Chalten. As an option for moderate skiers, we went to Loma del Diablo and half way up to Cerro Vespignani. The experience was unforgettable. Highly recommended for those passionate about nature and skiing. Views were spectacular, Merlin’s experience priceless. We very much appreciated Merlin’s attitude, both as a professional mountain guide and a great person. Our tours were very well organised, Merlin was always ready to share his knowledge and help with his advice, as well as capable to encourage us to go on without noticing any hurdles. Thanks very much, Merlin. We are very much hoping to be back in El Chalten very soon to undertake some further trips.
