Explore one of the quieter corners of the French Alps on a 5-day trekking traverse through the Beaufortain massif with the Esprit Montagne team.
Starting near Bourg Saint Maurice, this hut-to-hut journey crosses a varied alpine landscape of mountain lakes, open valleys, high passes and rocky summits. The route takes you from Cormet de Roselend towards the striking Pierra Menta, through the Saint-Guérin area and on towards Grand Mont, before finishing in Planay. Along the way, there are opportunities to spot marmots and chamois and to enjoy the alpine flora for which the area is known.
The trek is designed for hikers who already have some mountain experience. It's rated 2.5/5 technically and 2/5 physically. Most days involve approximately 5 to 7 hours of walking, with daily elevation gains generally ranging from 700 to 850 meters. Some sections are exposed and may require using your hands for balance or progression.
Over four nights, you will stay in mountain refuges and travel with a UIMLA-certified hiking guide from the Esprit Montagne team. The itinerary also retains some flexibility, particularly on the final day, allowing the guide to adapt the route according to weather and the group’s condition.

Meet your guide at the Funicular parking area in Bourg Saint Maurice at 9:30 am. Free parking is available for the duration of the trek. You will need to bring your own picnic lunch for this first day.
The trek begins towards Cormet de Roselend before entering the Nova Valley and climbing steadily towards the Nova lakes.
From Col du Grand Fond, the group can make a short out-and-back excursion towards Brèche de Parozan. You then descend towards Lac de Presset, beneath the distinctive Pierra Menta, before continuing to the refuge for the night.

Leave the refuge and follow the stream beneath Pierra Menta. Depending on the day, you may see climbers tackling its classic north pillar.
Continue down towards Lac d'Amour, where the surrounding terrain is known for its marmots. After lunch, cross another pass and descend towards Refuge de la Coire, enjoying views across the Tarentaise and Beaufortain.

After breakfast, set off with a lighter pack for an ascent of the Rey Ridge, a summit associated with the famous Pierra Menta ski mountaineering race. Participants who prefer to rest can remain at the refuge.
After returning, collect your equipment and continue towards the lakes of Saint-Guérin and its Nepalese-style footbridge.
The day finishes with a climb towards the Alpage refuge, located below Grand Mont, the main objective for the following day.

Today's route will be decided with the guide, including whether to travel with a lighter pack for the ascent.
The climb to Grand Mont takes approximately two hours or slightly longer. This summit is closely associated with the Pierra Menta race and offers extensive views from the top.
After descending, retrieve your backpack if necessary and continue along the trail towards the Arolles refuge for your final night in the mountains.
The final and longest day heads towards the Grande Journée area via Col de la Bathie and Col des Lacs, with the possibility of continuing towards Mont Mirantin.
The exact itinerary remains flexible. Depending on weather conditions and the group’s physical condition, the guide can shorten or modify the route. Options involving the summits of Grande Journée and Mont Mirantin will be discussed with the guide the previous evening.
The trek finishes in Planay, where transport is arranged back to Bourg Saint Maurice.
Expected arrival in Bourg Saint Maurice is around 5:30 pm, so onward transport can be planned from approximately 6:00 pm.
Accommodation
Accommodation consists of four nights in mountain refuges, in rooms or dormitories depending on availability.
Half-board accommodation during the trek is included.

Skill and fitness level required
Participants should already have previous hiking and mountain experience and be comfortable moving on mountain trails for several consecutive days.
A typical day involves approximately 700 to 900 meters of elevation gain, with around 5 to 7 hours of walking. You should therefore have sufficient endurance for sustained uphill and downhill hiking while carrying a backpack.
You should also be comfortable with occasional exposed terrain. Some sections may require using your hands for additional balance or support.
Do I need previous hiking experience?
Yes. Although the physical rating is relatively moderate, this trip is classified as mountain trekking for experienced participants. You should already be comfortable hiking in alpine terrain and completing several consecutive days of walking.
How difficult is the Beaufortain traverse?
The trip is rated 2.5/5 technically and 2/5 physically. Daily elevation gains are generally around 700 to 900 meters, and some sections can be exposed enough that you may need to use your hands.

Do I need to carry all my belongings?
Yes. This is a hut-to-hut trek and participants carry their own backpacks. Esprit Montagne recommends limiting your pack to roughly 5 to 7 kg before food and water.
Are meals included?
Half-board accommodation is included, as are picnic lunches from Day 2 onward. You must bring your own picnic lunch for Day 1.
Is insurance required?
Yes. Cancellation and repatriation insurance, together with mountain search and rescue coverage of at least €10,000, are mandatory.
Where does the trip begin and end?
The group meets at the Funicular parking area in Bourg Saint Maurice at 9:30 am on Day 1. The hike itself finishes in Planay on Day 5, followed by transportation back to Bourg Saint Maurice.
What time should I plan my departure on the last day?
The expected return to Bourg Saint Maurice is around 5:30 pm. Esprit Montagne recommends arranging onward transportation from 6:00 pm or later.
Can I stay in Bourg Saint Maurice before the trek?
Yes. If you would like to arrive one day before the trip, you can arrange an additional hotel night in Bourg Saint Maurice. Base Camp Lodge is a convenient pre-trip option. Please note that accommodation before or after the trek is not included in the standard trip package.
Can I leave my car in Bourg Saint Maurice during the trek?
Yes. If you arrive by car, you can leave your vehicle in the free parking area at the Funicular in Bourg Saint Maurice for the duration of the trek.
What backpack should I bring for the Beaufortain trek?
Bring a lightweight hiking backpack of approximately 45 to 50 liters, plus a rain cover and a waterproof bag or dry bag for spare clothing. We recommend keeping your pack to around 5 to 7 kg before adding food and water, while leaving 10 to 15 liters of space for picnic supplies. You should also have capacity for approximately 2 liters of water.
What clothing should I pack?
Bring clothing suitable for both warm and cold mountain conditions, including a sun hat or cap, warm hat, waterproof shell, gloves, lightweight down jacket or fleece, light and warm midlayers, 2 to 3 technical T-shirts, 2 to 4 pairs of hiking socks, hiking trousers, tights, shorts, and a change of clothes for the refuge. A buff or neck gaiter is optional but useful in poor weather.
What footwear do I need?
Bring hiking boots with Vibram soles or suitable high-quality trail shoes when appropriate according to the guide's recommendations. Your footwear should be well broken in before the trek.
What hiking essentials should I bring?
You should bring a sleeping sheet or sleeping bag liner for the huts, 2 telescopic trekking poles, a water bottle or hydration system with at least 2 liters of capacity, SPF 30 to 50 sunscreen, category 3 sunglasses, a lightweight headlamp, snacks, cash, and a valid ID card or passport.
How do I get to Bourg Saint Maurice?
Bourg Saint Maurice can be reached by train, including TGV services. If you are traveling by car, access is via Albertville and Moutiers.
Can the itinerary change during the trek?
Yes. Mountain conditions, weather, and the group's fitness level may require changes to the planned itinerary. This is especially relevant on Day 5, when the guide may shorten or modify the route if necessary.
