FAQs: Hiking in French Alps

What should I know about Hiking French Alps?

Hiking in the French Alps is an unforgettable experience. Whether you try the famous Tour du Mont Blanc, explore one of the many marked footpaths of Mercantour National Park, or go on a unique adventure in Les Calanques, you will enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. Join a hut-to-hut multi-day adventure, or a shorter 1-day Via Corda tour and discover the best hiking spots in France with one of the certified guides at Explore-Share.com.

What fitness level do French Alps hiking tours require?

Most walking holidays in the French Alps offer graded itineraries: easy valley walks, moderate multi-day treks and strenuous high-alpine routes. Each trip page clearly states daily distances, elevation gain and recommended fitness so you can choose the right walking holiday.

What’s included in a typical French Alps walking holiday?

Typical inclusions: guided route, accommodation (refuges or hotels), most meals, luggage transfers between stops, local transport for pick-up/drop-off and permits where required. Check each tour’s “what’s included” section for exact details.

Can I book a private or tailor-made French Alps walking tour?

Yes — our guides offer private guided walking holidays and tailor-made French Alps walking tours for couples, families or groups who want custom dates, pace or accommodation standards.

When is the best time for hiking tours in the French Alps?

The main season runs late June to mid-September for high-alpine routes; lower-altitude walking holidays are possible in spring and autumn. Snow and weather dictate opening dates for each pass, so check the itinerary’s season notes.

What should I pack for a French Alps hiking tour?

Essentials: layered clothing, waterproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots, hat and gloves for high routes, daypack, water bottle, sunscreen and basic first-aid. Each tour includes a recommended packing list with seasonal adjustments.

Are the guides qualified on Explore-Share partnered trips?

All guides on trips organised through Explore-Share are professionally qualified (national mountain leader certifications such as IFMGA/UIAGM, mountain leader diplomas or equivalent) and carry mountain-safety and first-aid training. Guides have local route knowledge and experience leading groups on the specific itinerary.

How hard are the daily stages on French Alps walking tours?

Daily stages vary by trip: easy days 8–12 km with small elevation gains; moderate days 12–20 km with steady climbs; difficult days can exceed 20 km and include steep ascents/descents or rocky terrain. Each tour page lists exact daily figures.

Are walking holidays in the French Alps suitable for solo travellers?

Yes — many guided walking tours welcome solo travellers and offer single-room options (sometimes at a supplement). Private departures are also available for solo travellers who prefer exclusive departures.

Do I need travel insurance and rescue cover for French Alps treks?

Strongly recommended: travel insurance that covers mountain rescue, helicopter evacuation and activity-specific risks. Some regions may also require permits — we note these on each itinerary.

Can I combine hiking with other activities (mountain climbing, ski touring, etc.)?

Yes — many customers combine walking holidays with mountain climbing or technical days. For seasonal packages (e.g., summer alpinism or autumn trekking) we recommend checking required experience and specific equipment lists.

REKHA

We really enjoyed our trip up and around Utelle. Based on weather conditions, Fabrice identified and organized a slightly different hike for optimal views and tailored to our hiking abilities. He also organized hotel transportation and a lovely picnic. He was very knowledgeable about local history. We are so glad that we were able to get off the beaten path and see something truly special.

We spent a day hiking with guide Fabrice in Mecantaur Park. It was a great hike with different levels of difficulty. We rested at the lake at around 2000 meters and then made our way to the mountain pass high above. We were rewarded with a lot of wildlife sightings and even a patch of snow in August. Patrice was great and gave us a lot of information about the area and the flora and fauna. He was also great at pointing out historical events that took place in the area in the past.

Fabrice nous a proposé une très belle randonnée. Il nous a permis d'observer la flore et de voir de nombreux chamois, des marmottes. Le niveau de marche était parfaitement adapté au groupe. Très belle journée !

Daniel

Fabrice was a wonderful guide with a wide knowledge of not only the history of the area but the flora and fauna of the French Mediterranean coast. The hike provided beautiful views of the cities along the coast as well as the mountains behind them. Highly recommend both the hike and the guide.
