Description

This full day of short route trail running tours in Madeira I will lead you on provides some of the most stunning and amazing scenery and views you can possibly encounter, as we physically push ourselves on the post-card pretty routes that wind around mountains, green valleys, fields and forests, as well as alongside the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

The island of Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal located in the North Atlantic Ocean, and is a popular year-round tourist destination due to its pleasant climate and its rich, fascinating and unique culture. There is much biodiversity on the island, and several of its landscapes are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We will pick you up in the morning from your hotel, and from there we have a selection of routes 20km or less we can run on – Porto da Cruz, Santana, Portela, Poiso, Machico or Encumeada.

Porto da Cruz is a lovely, quaint and charming village on the Northeast Coast of the island, and this trail involves running through some absolutely beautiful and lush green forests.

Santana is a route that winds its away across the majestic mountains of Santana city itself, and the area you will run through is designated as a UNSECO World Biosphere Reserve, with the Laurissilva Forest often named the most beautiful in Madeira.

Portela is a much more green route, with lush forests and landscapes making for a peaceful path.

Poiso is a high route, at 1400m above sea level, with 2 types of forest to run through and a dramatic descent to Ribeiro Frio before heading back up to Poiso itself.

Machico is the second biggest city on Madeira, with many of the houses and buildings having the ocean as a backdrop, and the highlight of this trail is definitely the epic view back over the city from the Pico do Facho viewpoint.

Encumeada is one of the most unique trails on the island, as we will run through several tunnels and dense vegetation, as well as pass several mesmerizing and idyllic lagoons and waterfalls.

All of these routes have unique and beautiful characteristics, and whatever one you choose you are guaranteed to enjoy!

Try any of these trail running routes and you will make memories to last a lifetime – book now to have a go!

Hiking Guide

I am a certified hiking guide, trail running and sky running athlete. I was born and raised on the island of Madeira, Portugal, and I know all the trails here like the back of my hand.

Since I was a child, I love being in the middle of nature. Madeira Island is blessed with beautiful landscapes and a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna. I like to show you my clients the natural beauty of the island, tell them about its history and make them feel like locals, with wonderful tours, at their own pace.

As a trail running and sky running athlete, I have participated in many races of the world circuit, and I have represented the Portuguese team in European championships and World Championships several times. One of my most important results was in 2015, when I won the MIUT in Madeira115 km.

Come and enjoy the best spots in Madeira!

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
