Rising to 3,798 meters, the Grossglockner is Austria’s highest mountain and one of the most iconic summits in the Eastern Alps. Its normal route offers a classic high-alpine experience, combining glacier travel, easy climbing, exposed ridges, and wide-reaching summit views in a spectacular mountain setting.
On this 2-day ascent, IFMGA-certified guide Stefan will lead you from the Stüdlhütte toward the Erzherzog Johann Hütte, also known as Adlersruhe, before continuing up the Glockner Leitl and along the ridge over the Kleinglockner to the summit cross of the Grossglockner. According to Stefan’s program, the route covers around 1,900 vertical meters in total and includes glacier terrain, two easy via ferrata sections, and light climbing on the summit ridge.
The trip starts with an independent hike to the Stüdlhütte, where you will meet Stefan in the evening. After checking equipment and reviewing how to use your harness and crampons, you will spend the night at the hut. The summit push begins early the next morning, with the goal of reaching the highest point in Austria before descending the same way back to the Stüdlhütte. Depending on your condition and plans, you can then descend independently to the valley or spend an additional night at the hut.
This is a moderately difficult high-altitude mountaineering trip. No previous rope or belaying experience is required, but you need to be sure-footed, comfortable with exposure, and fit enough for 6 to 8 hours of movement at altitude. Send a request to join Stefan on this classic Grossglockner ascent and experience one of the great alpine routes of Austria.
Meeting point
You will hike independently to the Stüdlhütte at 2,801 meters, following a well-marked trail that takes around 2.5 hours. The meeting point with Stefan is at the hut at 18:45. After arrival, Stefan will review the correct use of your harness and crampons, check the equipment, and brief the group on the ascent. Dinner and overnight at the Stüdlhütte.
After breakfast, you will leave in the early morning toward the Erzherzog Johann Hütte at Adlersruhe. The normal route leads across the glacier and through two easy via ferrata sections before continuing up the Glockner Leitl, which reaches slopes of up to 40 degrees. From there, you will follow the ridge over the Kleinglockner and continue with light climbing to the summit of the Grossglockner at 3,798 meters. After a summit break, you will descend by the same route back to the Stüdlhütte, where the guided part of the program ends.
Accommodation
Accommodation is at the Stüdlhütte. The guide reserves the hut place for participants, and guests should not make their own reservation for the first night. Accommodation costs are not included in the guiding price.
An additional night at the Stüdlhütte after the summit day may be possible, but participants should reserve that extra night themselves.

Do I need previous mountaineering experience?
No previous rope or belaying experience is required, but you need good fitness, sure-footedness, and a head for heights.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be ready for 6 to 8 hours of movement and a demanding summit day with around 1,000 meters of ascent and 1,900 meters of descent. Movement above 3,000 meters can feel significantly harder than at lower altitude.
Do I need to reserve the Stüdlhütte myself?
No. For the first night, the hut is reserved by the guide for you.
Is accommodation included in the price?
No. The Stüdlhütte overnight stay is not included in the guiding price.
Can I rent equipment?
Yes, modern rental equipment is available. You should mention your rental needs when booking.
What boots do I need?
You need crampon-compatible mountaineering boots. Stefan recommends using well-broken-in boots to reduce the risk of blisters.
What happens in bad weather?
The tour plan will be adapted to the conditions. In poor weather, safely reaching the hut may become the priority.

Mountain Guide
My passion for the mountains starts early in my life. At age 10 I summited Dachstein, the highest mountain in northern Austria the first time. But it took 6 more years to get me into climbing at age 16. Since then I haven't stopped climbing.
Since 2012 I have been self-employed as a climbing Guide. I became a fully-certified mountain guide in 2016.
I love how my guiding work has taken me to special places like Patagonia, Lyngen and Lofoten but also very much enjoy working in the Alps and climbing well-known peaks such as Dachstein, Großglockner, and Mount Blanc.
I will be happy to guide you on your next mountain holiday. I'll try to make it a satisfying and safe journey to the summit and back to the valley!

I very much enjoyed the trip. I had wished to do this trip for more than 20 years. Unfortunately I cought a virus a couple of days before we headed for the peak. To this very day I still dont feel ship shape, but still though, much better. Stefan is a fantastuc guide, and I felt safe all the way up and down. The weather forcast was bad for the 24 th of july in the afternoon, but became shitty 2-3 hours before forecasted with thunder and lightening in one go several times. We agreed to leave the peak after an approximately 10 minutes rest in order to reduce the impact of the increasingly bad weather. The decision was right, no discussion what so ever between the two of us. Stefan is utter professional. In stead we had a good rest at Herzug Johann hutte. We luckily made it safely all the way down, even though the via ferrata part to and fro the Herzug Johann hut was tiny bit slippery on the way down due to rain. I will most definitely recommend Stefan to other trekkers, and would be delighted to do another trip with him next year. Sincerely regards Rolf Norman Windheim Sørensen

Very nice trip to the summit. Great guide with a lot of knowledge, and fast to adjust since we had a bit of a misunderstanding. Fast and good response every day of the week. I would highly recommend going with Stefan.
