Description

If you are looking for a long and unforgettable hiking experience, then  this trip is for you. Come with me and discover the beautiful and legendary French Way of the Camino de Santiago!

Also known as the Way of Saint James, this ancient route extends from different countries to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain. It was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages, and a lot of people still follow its routes as a spiritual experience.

But this trail also offers an awesome hiking adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. It crosses beautiful and varied landscapes and many historical areas. On this 10-day trip (8 of hiking) we will explore part of the French Way, from Villafranca del Bierzo to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The French Way is the most popular Camino de Santiago route, and is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sights. We will cross breathtaking landscapes and historical churches, and enjoy delicious local food.

You can find the complete itinerary below. However, we can adapt it to the physical conditions of the group!

Itinerary

Day 1: Getting to the starting point

Transfer to the starting point. Tour briefing. Time for questions.

Day 2: Villafranca del Bierzo - O Cebreiro (28km)

This might be one of the best-known stages in the whole pilgrimage. We start among vineyards to leave Castilla y Leon and enter Galicia through the region of Os Ancares. For that we will ascend O Cebreiro, the pass dividing both regions. We will discover magical villages like Pereje and Trabadelo, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, and the Serracín Castle.

Day 3: O Cebreiro - Triacastela (25km)

Most of the way we will descend crossing a landscape with more vegetation than the ones in Castilla. Stand out the Church of San Esteban, the Church of San Xoán and the Chapel of San Pedro, in the village of Biduedo.

Day 4: Triacastela - Sarria (18km)

From Triacastela we can choose between two fascinating itineraries: the Samos Benedictine Monastery or a beautiful forest. In Sarria we can relax and share experiences with other people.

Day 5: Sarria-Portomarín (23km)

We will perceive a larger concentration of pilgrims given that we will be at 100 km from Santiago. It is a varied stage with many interesting stops in some Romanesque villages. You will not want to miss the visit to the parish of Concello de Sarria, Ferreiros and its Church of Santa María, and Portomarín.

Day 6: Portomarín - Palas de Rei (24km)

We will cross Sierra de Ligonde and San Antonio’s Mount. If we feel like it, we can got to Vilar de Donas to visit the Church of San Salvador.

Day 7: Palas de Rei - Ribadiso de Baixo (24km)

From Palas de Rei, the road will become more winding. We will enjoy the amazing local gastronomy of this region. Visits to Romanesque churches like Santa María, the Nurses House and the Chapel of San Roque.

Day 8: Ribadiso de Baixo - O´Pedrouzo (22km)

This stage is less demanding than the previous one and it will end at the doors of Santiago de Compostela. Visit to the Chapel of Santa Irene.

Day 9: O´Pedrouzo - Santiago de Compostela (19km)

We will end our adventure at the beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela. Views from the watchtower on the Gozo Mount. Visit to the Baroque Cathedral and the Obradoiro.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
