Description

Join me on this beautiful and of moderate technical difficulty tour through varied terrain to the beautiful Hochalmspitze, in Carinthia. At 3360m altitude it’s the highest Peak of Ankogel group in Hohe Tauern, also known as the Tauern Queen.

The traverse shows you very different and exciting types of landscapes with a stunning view. You can expect passages of glacier, rock and ice as much as easy alpine walking. The blooming meadows, the special Detmolderridge, the wide snowfields of the glacier in the north, the impressive formation of "Steinerne Mandl“ and the surrounding scene will make this tour an unforgettable experience!

On this 2-day ascent, we will meet at Gößkarspeicher parking on day 1, and hike up to Gießener hut to spend the night. On day 2 we'll face the real action, overcoming a glacier section to reach the summit and enjoy a breathtaking view of all the Tauern peaks. The descent is also challenging but rewarding, and we will enjoy some food and drinks once we are back again in the hut, before heading all the way down to the valley.

With ebike it is possible to make this tour in 1 day, so reach out and let me know if you are interested in this option.

So, contact me if you want to join me in this exciting climb to the beautiful Hochalmspitze! Don’t hesitate to ask me any questions you may have about the program.

For experienced climbers there are also other options in this area, such as rhe south pillar on Hochalmspitze (V+) and Winterleitengrat (a very long ridge with climbing difficulties up to (III+/IV). Also, if you are interested in going to Grossglocker, the king of Hohe Tauern, you can check my trip here.

Itinerary

Day 1: Ascent to Gießener hut

We will meet at Gößkarspeicher parking lot (1650m altitude) in the afternoon.

We start the tour with a relaxed hike on a regular trail across the green mountain landscape. We’ll have a wonderful view on a blue glittering lake and the valley. The rocky ridge provides a rough scene. After 1,5-2 hours we reach the "Gießener Hütte“ (2203m) where we will enjoy a relaxed evening. Here we can already see our next day destination- "Hochalmspitze“.

600m altitude, 3km, 1,5-2h.

Day 1: Hochalmspitze summit and descent

After breakfast we’ll start the second part of this trip: in the beginning the terrain will be rugged with big rocks to overcome. Arriving at the glacier we will continue the trail direction Detmoldergrat secured by me. Together we’ll work our way towards the peak, step by step. Approximately four hours later we’ll reach the peak of the mountain and we’ll enjoy the stunning view.

Walkin the eastside we’ll arrive at "Steinerne Mandln“. Depending on weather condition we’ll climb down or- if icy- lower down on a rope. From now on the descent will be relaxed and easy and back at Gießener Hütte we can grab some food and drinks.

Ascent 1150m altitude, Descent 1750m altitude, 10km, 7 hours

Mountain Guide

Growing up in Salzburg's Lungau, Austria, my enthusiasm for the mountains has been rooted in me since childhood.

In winter, I passionately lead my guests on ski tours or show them the best runs while skiing off-piste. In later season I’m guiding in Norway (Lyngen/Senja). And another great passion is ice climbing on frozen waterfalls.

In summer I like to be out and about on rocks and ice in my local mountains but also abroad.

I look forward to go on tour together with you!

Aren

Klaus was a phenomenal guide. He was very experienced, extremely friendly and was an excellent teacher for multi-pitch rock climbing. He was able to push me through my mental limits without pressure and while always having our safety in mind and taught me everything I needed to know for my own multi-pitch adventures. In summary, Klaus was a phenomenal guide all around and I would recommend him to all my friends and family without a second thought! Thank you Klaus for your expert guidance and for giving me a once in a lifetime experience!

Mark

The whole experience was hard work seriously hard work. I had trained for months, but the pace we moved at, I did struggle at times and made mistakes. The weather will determine the pace you move because its your Guides job to help get you up and down safely, so be prepared. The Altitude did have an affect as well. Klau our guide was professional and did a marvellous job getting us up and down.
