Description

Monte Rosa (4,634m) is a gorgeous mountain in the Pennine Alps of Italy. The second highest mountain in the entire Alps, it is a magnificent peak. And on this trip, we will spend a day hunting for, finding, and skiing down its amazing slopes.

Discover the powder and wild glaciers of the Monte Rosa massif on this guided ski-mountaineering tour. Led by a certified UIAGM mountain guide, you’ll explore high-altitude terrain and ski pristine descents framed by breathtaking alpine panoramas.

Monte Rosa’s heavily glaciated landscape and multiple 4,000-metre peaks make it one of the Alps’ best playgrounds for ski mountaineers seeking big scenery and reliable snow.

Monte Rosa is a marvel to admire. It is the kind of mountain that impresses you even if you have seen it a hundred times. And on this full day adventure, you will have the chance to do more than just admire it. You will also have the chance to ski down its marvellous slopes.

If that sounds like something you want to spend a day doing in the Alps if Italy, just send me a request and I'll take care of the rest!

    Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrival and Welcome

Arrive in the afternoon at Milan Malpensa Airport, where a private transfer will take you to Champoluc in the Val d’Ayas—or meet directly at the hotel if you prefer.

On the way, you’ll have the opportunity to rent technical and safety equipment. The day ends with a delicious Valdostana-style dinner in a local restaurant and an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2: First Outings and Mountain Safety

Your adventure begins on the slopes and off-piste terrain of the Monterosa Ski area. We’ll alternate between freeride descents and short uphill climbs using skins, perfect for getting comfortable with your equipment and testing avalanche gear.

This day focuses on avalanche safety, glacier awareness, and regaining your ski rhythm. Experienced skiers can opt for a longer tour reaching altitudes of up to 3,500 meters. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Ascent of a Monte Rosa Summit

We’ll take on one of Monte Rosa’s introductory 4,000-meter peaks, such as Punta Giordani or Punta Vittoria.

This is a great opportunity to practice ski-mountaineering progression with skins and crampons, gaining confidence and autonomy on glaciated terrain. Return to the hotel in the evening for a well-deserved rest.

Day 4: Journey to the High-Altitude Huts

After a relaxed breakfast, enjoy a mix of fun descents and technical skiing exercises before skinning up toward one of Monte Rosa’s high mountain huts—either Rifugio Gnifetti or Rifugio Mantova.

Spend the night surrounded by the majestic high-alpine landscape.

    Day 5: The 4,000-Meter Experience

This is the highlight of the trip: a spectacular ascent toward Colle del Lys and, weather permitting, the summit of a 4,000-meter peak.

There’s even the chance to reach the legendary Capanna Margherita (4,559 m)—the highest mountain hut in Europe.

    Day 6: Return

After breakfast and farewells, we’ll make our way back to Milan Malpensa Airport or continue home, carrying unforgettable memories from your Monte Rosa adventure.

    FAQs

I'M A STRONG OFF-PISTE SKIER BUT I HAVE NO SKI MOUNTAINEERING EXPERIENCE. CAN I JOIN YOU?

This itinerary is designed for skiers with at least a couple of years of ski mountaineering experience. Good ski mountaineering technique is required to move safely and efficiently, while conserving energy. If you're new to ski mountaineering, we recommend focusing on developing your skills during the winter before your departure. Reaching the required level doesn't take long, with consistent commitment. To accelerate your progress, consider booking a private guide or taking our introductory ski mountaineering course for professional instruction.

I'M ON A SNOWBOARD. CAN I JOIN THIS TRIP?

Yes. You can participate with a splitboard. Since it's a fairly heavy board, you'll need to have a lot of experience and be very fit.

DO I NEED A SLEEPING BAG FOR THE SHELTERS?

No, a sleeping bag sheet is sufficient. All shelters provide warm blankets, but not fresh sheets. Sleeping bags are used as personal linens for hygiene reasons.

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?

This tour requires excellent physical fitness. You'll ski and climb at high altitude for approximately 7 hours a day for 4 consecutive days. You need to be fit and strong to complete the daily pitches without becoming overly tired the next day.

WHAT SKIS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT SHOULD I BRING FOR THIS TRIP?

It's advisable to have the lightest possible equipment. Modern ski touring skis are lightweight and offer good performance even in deep, varied snow. It's recommended to have skis with a width of around 90 mm, equipped with low-tech bindings. It's also advisable to bring lightweight, comfortable ski touring boots. We strongly recommend bringing a helmet. There are many ski touring helmets on the market that are lighter than standard alpine ski helmets.

WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS?

We'll adapt the itinerary to your needs, modifying individual stages or, if necessary, changing the entire route, to ensure you ski where the weather and trails are best. Whatever the forecast, we'll make sure your ski holiday is fantastic.
