This is undoubtedly one of the great classic ascents in the Alps — a scenic high-altitude climb that begins from either Rifugio Gnifetti or Rifugio Mantova.
From the hut, the ascent follows glacier terrain, which may be crevassed but poses no significant technical difficulties aside from the physical challenge of the altitude.
Rifugio Regina Margherita is located on the summit of Punta Gnifetti, the highest peak in Valsesia. Built in 1893 and renovated in 1980, it serves as an important physical and meteorological observatory for the Piedmont Region, and is the highest mountain hut in Europe (4,554 meters).
A unique feature of this climb is that reaching the summit (Punta Gnifetti) coincides with reaching the hut (Capanna Margherita), where you can eat, drink, and rest before descending. Proper preparation and awareness are key to enjoying this incredible experience to the fullest.

Exemplary is the word. Andrea's colleague Simone was my guide for this ascent. Andrea coordinated my solo expedition of Monte Argentera with only a few days notice. Conversation with Simone was easy and fascinating from the get-go. He tailored the expedition to suit me best: we moved at a faster pace and took time to meet the wild animals. He introduced me to harness-and-rope based mountain-climbing and created challenges within my limits - always acknowledged the small accomplishments which was very reassuring!. After the main ascent, Simone used his climbing expertise to reach a child who had fallen from a cliff and assisted in an air-ambulance secours. He took it all in his stride and his humility and heroism were exemplary. As my mountaineering debut, I've come away from the experience with confidence, trust and fascination - I would be thrilled to do another.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
