The triangular-shaped island of Sicily is separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. The landscape of the island is dominated by hills and mountains with their slopes being heavily cultivated. Its northern coast is home to a collection of mountain ranges, which include the Madonie, Nebrodi and Peloritani. All of these ranges are part of the larger Apennines mountain range.
The island receives a Mediterranean climate featuring mild and wet winters and hot and dry summers. The in-between seasons host variable conditions.
