Located 70 km west of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru stands tall at an imposing height of 4,562 m and offers spectacular views of Kilimanjaro on a clear day.

The trail begins from Momella Gate in Arusha National Park and takes you to explore the amazing plant and animal life of the region. You’ll spend the first two days hiking on a beautiful path, passing by the Ngarenanyuki River, heading towards Miriakamba Hut (2500m) and Saddle Hut (3500m). Stunning views of the peak of Meru will accompany you all along.

We’ll attempt the summit on the third day, starting just past midnight. Ascending gradually, we’ll cross Rhino Point (3800m) and  Cobra Point (4350m) to get to the top. And what a feeling it would be! The summit offers unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro and  Mount Meru Ash Tray. After relishing our time here, we’ll get back to Miriakamba Hut and stay overnight. The last day will take us from Miriakamba Hut to Arusha, ending this remarkable trip.

Regarding difficulty, keep in mind that it is a medium grade trek suitable for both seasoned trekkers and newbies. Also, the trip is available all year round, all you’ll need is a fit body to come along.

Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania

We’ll pick you up from the Kilimanjaro International Airport, and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha. You’ll spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool.

Day 1: Moshi – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

After breakfast, we’ll pick you up from Arusha and drive you to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Here, after registration with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA), you will begin your ascent. The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; you should expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and potentially elephants near the trail. Due to the high possibility of spotting wildlife, an armed ranger, hired through the National Park, is required to hike with our team for the duration of the hike. As you continue, you will pass by the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru. Then, we’ll arrive at the Miriakamba Hut (2500m), and you’ll enjoy a beautiful sunset and dinner here.

Duration: 5-7 hours hiking

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Saddle Hut (3500m)

After breakfast, you will start ascending the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle. You might also spot various wild animals along the way! The trail has amazing views of Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. When you arrive at camp, you’ll have the option of hiking Little Mt. Meru (3820m) with your guide for more acclimatization. After an early dinner, you’ll receive ample rest before your midnight summit attempt. Get to sleep by 1900!

Duration: 3-5 hours of hiking

Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500m) – Summit Attempt (4566m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

Starting juts past midnight at 00:30, we’ll have tea and biscuits and then begin the summit attempt at 1:30 am. The trail starts off on a steep grade to Rhino Point (3800m) to Cobra Point (4350m). The last hour of the hike you will scamble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro. After enjoying the views, we’ll descend to Saddle Hut for a short break. You will then continue descending to Miriakamba Hut (2500m) for dinner and overnight.

10-12 hours of hiking

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Arusha (1400m)

We’ll return back to Arusha, ending this incredible trip.
