Description

Rising up to 4,556 meters in elevation and casting an imposing shadow over the rest of Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is one of Tanzania’s premier hiking destination.

Just 70 kilometres west of the iconic Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is the fifth highest peak in Africa and second tallest mountain in Kenya. It makes for an excellent acclimatization trek for those heading off to Kili and is a hidden gem in its own right.

After meeting up at Kilimanjaro International Airport, we will head to the hotel in Moshi (not included in the trip price) to go over our itinerary the day before the trip begins.

At 8 am the following morning, we will drive up to the park. After registering, we will make our way out onto the trail and begin hiking from the Momella gate (1,500 meters) to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 meters).

Along the way, we will be accompanied by an armed guard, while we enjoy phenomenal views of Kilimanjaro and get the chance to see cape buffaloes, giraffes, warthogs and bushbucks, among many other animals.

Arusha National Park is renowned for its abundant biodiversity, meaning we’ll have plenty of chances to see all sorts of rare and exotic species as we go.

On the second day, we will hike up a steep path to the saddle of Meru. From the top of the saddle, we will enjoy great views of Meru crater. We spend this night at the Saddle Hut (3,500 meters).

The following day, we will wake up just after midnight and ascend to Socialist Peak, as the highest peak of Mount Meru is known. The trail is quite steeps, with loose gravel and rocky ridges to traverse, but none of it is technically challenging.

After watching the sunrise from the summit, we will head down to Miriakamba Hut, where we will spend the night.

The following day, we will hike back out to the front of the park and leave back for
