Why should I choose Picos de Europa National Park for my Mountain Climbing adventure?

Scenery marked by history

Most of the trails in Picos de Europa are the result of native shepherds who moved their cattle to different heights of the valleys. Locals have evolved through grazing their livestock, cutting wood for construction and using the force of water to grind grain. You can follow all these traces until today.

Flora

The Picos de Europa National Park is home to more than 1400 species of plants. In general terms, they can be divided into four types according to height: plain (from 0 to 800 m), mountainous (from 800 to 1800 m), subalpine (from 1800 to 2200) and alpine (from 2200 on). Among the main species we find: purple orchids, oaks, lime trees, walnuts, laurels and elms.

Mountain huts system

There is a good network of mountain huts in Picos de Europa, which allows several-day mountaineering tours, or are simply ideal if you want to be high in the mountains for a few days. Sleeping bags will be necessary. Opening hours may vary, and it is advisable to contact the hut in advance.

Best period

The best time to climb in Picos de Europa is summer (preferably June or September, to avoid the most tourist season).
