This trek in Morocco is much more than the summit on **M’Goun (4071m)**. While the views from the top of **North Africa’s second highest peak** are undeniably stunning, there is a lot more to discover on this one-of-a-kind **cultural trek in the Atlas Mountains**.

As we explore the area surrounding M’Goun on foot, we will get an up close and personal look at the **local Berber culture**. We will pass through the **adobe villages** that dot this arid landscape, seemingly frozen in time. Each night, **we will sleep in local homestays, hostels or tents**, as nomads still do in this remote corner of the world.

In addition to interacting with locals, we will also discover natural wonders such as the **Mgoun Canyon**. You will need to bring sandals (or Crocs) to fully appreciate this canyon, however. As we make our way downriver,  we will wade through the water inside the canyon. The experience is hard to describe with words, but for some, the sensation borders on spiritual.

As is custom in this area, we will be accompanied by **pack mules** throughout our journey. This means you will only need to a carry a lightweight day pack with the essentials – our trusty pack mules will take care of the rest.

A **local chef** will also be joining us, preparing all of our meals with as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. **You can plan on healthy, balanced breakfasts, lunches and dinners throughout our trek.** Lunches will be on the “light” side so that we can continue trekking with ease. At the end of the day, there will be plenty of time to relax and refuel.

**This trip is suitable for fit trekkers with previous experience in the mountain.** On average, we will trek 5-6 hours per day during 6 days. You can find more details in the day-by-day itinerary below.

On our first day of trekking, we will travel through the farms and apple orchards of the **Arous Valley** on our way to **Azib Ikkis (2250m)**.

From Azib Ikkis, we will ascend through the Arous Valley until reaching a mountain pass situated at 3350m. From here, we will descend to the **Takeddit Plateau** and marvel at the incredible views.

At the end of the day, we will set up camp, eat and rest in preparation for the summit on M’Goun the next morning.

Azib Ikkis - Takeddit Plateau

Today, we will wake up early and begin our trek toward the summit of **M’Goun (4071m)**. We will ascend gradually, enjoying the panoramic views from up above.

Once we reach the summit, we will descend over steep, rocky terrain toward the Northeast and spend the night in the **Oulillimt River** **Valley** below.

SUMMIT ON M'GOUN

As we trek through **Oulillimt**, we will witness a truly unique rock formation carved by wind and water over the years. From here, an “up and down” trail will take us to **Aflafal (2296m)** and _**Tigrement Ait Ahmed**_, the ruins of an ancient fortress.

We will spend the night in **Waouchki**, a small village I recommend you explore before we sit down to dinner.

 Oulillimt - Waouchki 

From Waouchki, we will trek toward the **Mgoun Canyon**. At this point, we will trade in our hiking boots for sandals (or other water-friendly footwear) and get in the water. We will follow the course of the river through the canyon, often wading across it.

We will spend the night in **Aguerzaka**.

Waouchki - Aguerzaka

This will be our last day of trekking. From Aguerzaka, we will make our way through the many villages that dot the **Roses Valley.** Adobe huts abound in this valley humbly settled by the Berbers.

Once we reach **Bou Tharar** at the end of the valley, we will return to Marrakech.

On our final day together, we will have free time to explore the streets, gardens and palaces of Marrakech before parting ways.

M’Goun, 9-day cultural trek in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco

On this multi-day trek, I will take you on the _Ruta de los Tres Refugios_, or “Three Huts Route”. Over the course of 6 days, we will trek from **hut-to-hut** and summit the mighty **Pico Posets (3369m)**. This peak, located within the **Posets-Maladeta Natural Park**, is the second highest **in the Pyrenees**.

As we make our way along the _Ruta de los Tres Refugios_, we will admire the Pico Posets **from all sides and angles**. While the Pico Posets may be the highlight of this trek, this natural area **in Spain** has much more to offer. Abundant mountain top lakes, high alpine meadows, rivers and peaks make this **one of the most beautiful treks in the Pyrenees**. If we’re lucky, we may even see some of the animals native to this area up close and personal.

During this trek, we will stay in the **Estos Hut**, the **Biadós Hut** and the **Ángel Orús Hut** (del Forcau). Each of these ideally situated **mountain huts** has its own unique character and charm. In addition to breathtaking views, you can count on a comfortable place to rest and relax. **We will enjoy hearty breakfasts, boxed lunches and hot dinners prepared by the huts daily.**

The _Ruta de los Tres Refugios_ is an intermediate level trek. As such, it is **suitable for fit trekkers with previous experience in the mountain.** At times, the terrain is challenging and uneven. We will also make a few rivers crossings and may trek across snow in some areas.

Every summer, I lead this trip starting in **Benasque**, my hometown, with 4-8 participants. Adventurous travelers and trekkers from around the world are invited to join me! On the first day, we will meet in the town of **Benasque** and carpool to the **Aneto Campground**. We will leave our cars parked here for the duration of our trek. From the campground, we will begin our trek toward the **Estos Hut**.

A forested path will lead us up the **Estos River** to the entrance of the **Posets-Maladeta Natural Park**. From here, we will follow a trail to the Estos Hut. Along the way, we will have views of **Pico Posets** and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Benasque - Aneto Campground - Estos Hut

After breakfast, we will set out toward the **Biadós Hut**.

From the Estos Hut, we will follow the Estos River up the valley and cross it upon reaching the **Chistau Pass.** At this point, we will have incredible views over the entire **Estos Valley**.

From the top of the mountain pass, we will descend through alpine meadows into the **Chistau Valley** below. Once we reach the **Cinqueta River**, we will cross to the other side and continue along the trail.

After passing by the **Añes Cruces Cabin**, we will have nearly arrived at our destination: the **Biadós Hut**.

Heading east from the Biadós Hut, we will cross a small ravine and trek past a barn and some haystacks before once again crossing the Cinqueta River.

Once on the other side, we will continue onward through the **Riberata Ravine** until reaching the **_Ibón de Millars_**. From this glacial lake, we will climb up to the **_Collado de Eriste_** (_de la Forqueta_). At 2864m, this mountain pass will prepare us for our summit on **Pico Posets** the following day.

From the mountain pass, we will descend toward the _**Ibón de Llardaneta**_, another glacial lake. We will follow another ravine from here, crossing to the other side just before reaching the **Ángel Orús Hut** (_del Forcau_).

Biadós Hut - Forquesta Pass - Ángel Orús Hut

Today, we will wake up earlier than usual in order to get an early start on the day.

Retracing our steps, we will return to the _**Ibón de Llardaneta**_ and the **Fonda Canal**. We will follow this canal uphill and traverse a section that is often covered in snow. The climb from here to the summit of the **Pico Posets (3369m)** is steep, but the views from the top will be well worth the effort.

We will descend via the same route and spend the night back at the Ángel Orús Hut.

PICO POSETS SUMMIT

After breakfast, we will make our way toward the **Ibones Valley**.

Along the way, we will pass by the **Llardaneta Hut** and the **_Ibón de Eriste_**, a double glacial lake. Continuing upward from here, we will reach the **Plana Pass** (2700m). As we cross this mountain pass, we will trek along the coast of the _**Ibón de la Plana**_. We will also have spectacular views of Pico Posets.

On the other side of the pass, we will descend past glacial lakes until reaching the **Perramó Pass**. From this pass beside the granite peaks of _**Agulla de Perramó**_, we will have panoramic views of the **Batisielles Valley** below.

We will pass by several alpine lakes as we make our way toward the Estos Valley and the **_Cascada de Molseret_**. From this waterfall, we will once again find the ravine that leads us back to the **Estos Hut**.

Ángel Orús Hut - Plana Pass - Estos Hut

On our final day, we will retrace our steps back to the Aneto Campground and return to Benasque to celebrate!

Over the course of 6 days, we will make a complete loop through the _**Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici**_ **National Park**. Translated into English as “The winding streams and St. Maurice Lake”, this park **in the Spanish Pyrenees** is full of enchanting sites.

As we make our way around the **_Carros de Foc_** circuit, we will stop and stay in 5 different mountain huts: **Saboredo**, **Restanca**, **Ventosa y Calvell**, **Estany Llong** and **Colomina**. Each hut has its own charm and seems to be in a more picturesque setting than the last. In addition to being an ideal place to rest and relax, the huts will also be preparing all of our meals. **You can count on delicious breakfasts, boxed lunches and hot dinners daily.**

On this multi-day, **hut-to-hut trek** on the Carros de Foc, or “Chariots of Fire”, we will see the very best of the Aigüestortes National Park. There are far too many incredible sites to list here, but a few of the highlights include:

–**Lake** _**Sant Maurici**_ (St. Maurice Lake), the most prominent glacial lake in the park

–_**Els Encantats**_, a twin-peaked mountain towering over St. Maurice Lake

–**Colomers Cirque**, a spectacular amphitheater-like valley doted with glacial lakes of all shapes and sizes

\-The needle-like **_Agulles d’Amitges_** peaks

\-All four regions of the park: **Alta Ribagorza**, **Valle de Aran**, **Pallars Sobirá** and **Pallars Jussá**

–**Besiberri Massif**, a mountain massif with several 3000m+ peaks

–**Monestero Valley**

Along the _Carros de Foc_, we will see many of the 200 lakes located within Catalonia’s only national park.  We will also trek through lush pine forests and admire the many stunning peaks that rise within _**Aigüestortes.**_ 

At the huts, we will revel in the mountain life as we awaken with the sunrise each morning. In the evenings, we will enjoy a tasty meal in the company of new friends and old as the sun sets over this one-of-a-kind landscape in the Pyrenees.

**This multi-day trek along the** _**Carros de Foc**_ **is suitable for fit trekkers**. Every August, I lead this group trek with 4-8 participants from around the world. I speak Spanish, Castilian, French and English, so hopefully we won’t have any languages barriers!

We will meet in **Espot** in the morning and travel together to **St. Maurice Lake**. With a view of the _Els Encantats_ mountain, we will start walking leisurely through the forest toward the **Amidges Hut**. From here, we will follow a trail upward to **Lake Ratera**. A short decent will land us at our first destination: the **Saboredo Hut**, where we will spend the night.

_Remember that lunch on the first day is not included. Please bring your own sack lunch to enjoy on the trail._

Espot - St. Maurice Lake - Lake Ratera - Saboredo Hut

This section of the trail is more difficult than the previous section. From the Saboredo Hut, we will traverse the **Sendrosa Col** in order to reach the **Colomers Cirque**. The descent from this col is steep and rocky in parts.

Before entering the Colomers Cirque, we will sidetrack a bit in order to see **Long Lake** and _**Lac Major de Colomers**_. We will admire the view of the lakes and nearby refugio before continuing onward.

From here, we will gradually ascend _**Port de Ribereta**_, **_Port de Caldes_** and **_Coll de Crestada_** (Crestada Col). This is a beautiful path that only gets better as we begin our descent toward **Lake Restanca** and the **Restanca Hut** below.

We will give our legs a bit of a rest today with a shorter, less difficult hike. From the Restanca Hut, we will ascend higher into the mountain and once again cross the Crestada Col. From here, a gradual descent will bring us to the inviting **Ventosa y Calvell Hut**.

Today will be our longest and most challenging day on this trek. Fortunately, it also happens to be the day with the best scenery!

After climbing our way through scattered boulders, a steep ascent will take us up to the **Contraix Col (2748m)**. This is the highest point we will reach during our 6-day trek.

From the col, we will carefully descend toward the _**Sant Nicolau**_ **Valley**, pausing frequently to take in the remarkable views. Following a short uphill climb from the valley, we will have arrived at the **Estany Llong Hut** tired, but thoroughly satisfied.

Ventosa y Calvell Hut - Contraix Col - Estany Llong Hut

From the Estany Llong Hut, we will slowly rise above the valley as we walk through a pine forest. As we advance along the trail, we will see one glacial pond after the next, until reaching the **Dellui Col**.

Atop the col, we will have an impressive view of the trail ahead. Winding between glacial lakes interspersed with boulders, we will eventually reach **_Estany Tort_**. From this lake, we will follow old railroad tracks and climb up to the final hut on our itinerary: the **Colomina Hut**.

On our final day, we will reluctantly set off on the last leg of our journey in the _**Aigüestortes**_ **National Park**. We will pass the beautiful glacial lakes of Colomina and transit the **_Pas de L’os_**. Once we reach the **_Estany Negre de Peguera_** and the **Josep M. Blanc Hut**, we will start to trek uphill toward **Monestero**.

As we ascend Monestero, we will climb over boulders and reach the **_Estany Gran de Peguero_**. From this lake, a few short steps will land us at the top of hill. At this point, we will begin our descent through a forest to St. Maurice Lake, effectively completing our circuit.

Upon arrival, taxis will be waiting to take us back to Espot.

_Please keep in mind that the transfers to and from St. Maurice Lake are NOT included._
