**Are you an adventurous trekker looking to spend some time in Italy?** Then join me on this **week-long trekking trip** on the **Aeolian Islands!**

The **Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site** located in the Mediterranean part of **Italy, Sicily**, is the apex of culture and history. Named after the god of the winds, Aeolus, it encompasses **seven islands**, all of which we will get to explore on this magical week-long adventure.

We begin our trip in the island of **Lipari**, where we will get to explore both the ancient culture and nature that envelop the island. As we tour the **kaolin quarries,** you will see how the thousand-year-old developments, such as the thermal baths completely take shape against the backdrop of the pure blue sea. The next day we get to enjoy a private boat trip to the island of **Vulcano** to trek the **“La Fosse”** crater. In the days to follow, we will get to discover the islands of **Alicudi and Salina**, and make our way to **Stromboli,** finding many breathtaking sites in each place. On **Alicud**i, you will discover the **San Bartolo Church** (17th Century) as well as the rustic village of **Montagna**. On **Salina**, we will trek through the nature reserve known as **Monte Fossa delle Felci**, in order to see forests and high peaks. We will eventually be rewarded with a trip to **Stromboli**, where you will have the **option** to climb to one of the region’s most famous volcanoes.

We will be staying in the four-star **Gattopardo Park Hotel** for the duration of this trip, which is a wonderful place to retire to at the end of a jam-packed day. And there will be plenty of **free time** available to you to swim in the irresistible water close by.

Meet at **6pm** at the hotel in Lipari for a group briefing with a presentation of the itinerary, dinner and overnight stay.  
As an alternative, and upon individual request, we can assist with other travel arrangements to Lipari.

Meeting

We will take a **private bus** to **Quattropani.** The excursion will then start with the **kaolin (china clay) quarries**, a fascinating place that has been abandoned for almost half a century, facing the wild western coast; along the route we will meet the colorful kaolin formations, a field of fumaroles that testifies the volcanic activities on the island, the cliffs of a big fossil lake filled with volcanic deposits from about 100,000 years ago and splendid prairies with scatterings of miniature palm trees. We will continue along the coast, climb up to the Thermal Baths of San Calogero and then have a tour of the 19th century structure and of the archaeological site. We’ll then head back on a **private coach** to Lipari where we will have some free time. Most of the roads and paths on the route will be downhill.

**Change in elevation: 350 m**

Lipari Island Excursion

We’ll transfer to **Vulcano** on a **private boat.** We’ll trek to the crater called **“La Fosse”**, which was the scene of a devastating eruption in 1888, and today it is characterized by intense secondary phenomena; on the tour we will be able to observe the volcanic deposits emitted from various past eruptions, as well as the morphology of the area around the crater (that rises up out of a vast caldera marked by a series of volcanic domes) and the peninsula of Vulcanello, the last portion of the island that was formed around 2000 years ago. After visiting the fields of fumaroles, we will return to our base taking an off-track sandy path that goes through wild broom, the very first form of vegetation of the volcano. After arriving at the port of Vulcano, we will have some free time for having lunch, swimming, visiting mud puddles and enjoying the warm waters of the beach in Levante or the black beaches in Ponente. We will then head back to Lipari on a private boat with a quick stop at the sea stacks of Pietra Menalda and Pietra Lunga.

Guests will either take a packed lunch or choose to have lunch in one of the restaurants on the island.

Excursion to the Island of Vulcano

We’ll transfer to **Alicudi** on a **private boat.** After arriving in **Scalo Palomba,** we will start the ascent up and we will see the 17th century Saint Bartolo Church (350 m), the village of Montagna (480 m) and the “plains” below Filo dell’Arpa (550 m), along stone stairs with more than 1500 steps. We’ll break for lunch on the border of the sea stacks, which dominate the inaccessible western coast, a shelter for wild goats, Eleonora’s falcons and rare botanical species. We will return to the base using the same route, passing through magical places of an island where time seems to have stopped. We will return to Lipari on a private boat. During the crossing, it might be possible to see some dolphins.

We willl eat packed lunches.

Excursion to the Island of Alicudi

We’ll transfer on a **private boat** to the port of **Rinella** where we will take a **private boat to Valdichiesa**. We will go trekking through **Monte Fossa delle Felci**, the first nature reserve to be instituted on the Aeolian Islands, which is characterized by thick woods, Erika shrubs and strawberry trees (some of which are particularly large). The route, winding partially along trail no. 12 and partially through forests, will take us up to **the highest peak of the archipelago (962 m.).** We will return on trail no. 7 stopping in the village of **Malfa** where we will take a break for food and wine tasting at the Fenech wine cellar. We will then take a private coach to S. Marina to board the boat for Lipari.

**Level of difficulty: easy to moderate**  
**Change in elevation: about 580 m**

Excursion to the Island of Salina

After **breakfast**, check-out.  
Transfer to **Stromboli** by hydrofoil and check-in to the hotel. Participants will then have free time to have lunch and go to the beaches. In the afternoon, an excursion to the craters of **Stromboli**: this excursion to the craters is truly fascinating, allowing you to admire a magnificent show of nature. For thousands of years the volcano erupted, non-stop, at such regular intervals that it earned the name the **“Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.** For participants who are not interested in climbing to the top, it’s possible to reach the area called the “Observatory” , which is a natural terrace where you can admire the **“Sciara del Fuoco”** (which is the blackened laval scar running down Stromboli) with immense explosions and hear the noise made by the lava as it rolls down the valley and makes contact with the water. The drastic change in temperature is exactly what causes the fragments of lava to become volcanic glass. For those interested in climbing **Stromboli**, the appointment is in the afternoon at the tour guide office to get ready and make sure you have all the gear. The ascent will take about 3 hours with a break at the summit, whereas the descent will take about 2 hours. Packed dinners or dinner in one of the restaurants in the village. Overnight stay in the hotel.

**Level of difficulty: easy in terms of technique. However, the ascent will require a certain level of strength.**  
**Change in elevation: 850 m**

Excursion to Stromboli

After **breakfast**,  we will check-out from the hotel. **Transfer to Lipari** by hydrofoil and then departure for original destinations.

1-week Trekking and Beach Holiday on the Aeolian Islands, Sicily

**Combine unique cultural experiences with outdoor adventure during this 1 week journey as we explore some of the most incredible sites in Southern Italy!  Not only will you have a chance to visit the stunning UNESCO World Heritage sites of Matera, but you will also explore the breathtaking panoramas of the Lucanian Dolomites!**  

During our 7 days together, we will have ample time to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Matera, a city known for its unique cave dwellings dug out of the caverns and grottos of the area.  Matera is thought to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world, with the famous Sassi of Matera inhabited since prehistoric times.   The area is also the site of the incredible Rupestrian Churches, which were also carved out of caves hundreds of years ago. A visit to Matera is a fascinating lesson in history, culture, tradition, and, of course, geology.

We will also visit some of the highlights of the Lucanian Dolomites.  We will trek through the countryside, observing as the forests give way to mountainous terrain, visiting a number of important historical sites along our route, including castles, monasteries, and even an abandoned ghost town.  We will walk through the Italian badlands called “Calanchi,” and observe the rural way of life in the villages of the Dolomites.  A day-by-day outline of the itinerary is included below so you can get a sense of all the incredible stops we will make during the journey.

The excursions and hikes are generally considered easy and suitable for any individual who is comfortable being on their feet for 5-6 hours per day.  Each day’s elevation change is generally relatively mild (maximum of 380 m) and the trails are not technically difficult.

Our base will be the conveniently located, comfortable 4 star resort of Giardini d’Oriente.  6 dinners, 6 breakfasts, and 5 boxed lunches are included, as well as all transportation during the trip.  The meeting place and drop off point will be either the airport or train station in Bari, Italy.  In addition to the quoted price, there is a supplemental fee of 95 Euro to be paid in person at the start of the trip.

We meet at the train station or airport in Bari, Italy.  From there, the group will be transferred to Basilicata, where the hotel is located.  After dinner at the hotel, we meet to discuss the itinerary for the next 5 days.

Arrival, transfer to hotel

From the hotel, our transfer takes us to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera.  We explore different neighborhoods of the city and have the opportunity to learn about the culture, history, and construction of the famous cave dwellings of the city.

We then visit the Regional Natural Park of the Murgia Materana, where we set off on foot through the beautiful Gravina di Matera Canyon to visit the famous stone (Rupestrian) churches of the area.

Packed lunch provided. We return to the hotel for dinner.

Sassi of Matera & Materana Park

We continue our exploration of Materana today, first vising the regional Parco Materana, where we visit more caverns, churches, and dwellings, some of which are as old as the Metal Age.

We then begin our hike toward Montescaglioso, stopping to enjoy our boxed lunch in a beautiful cavern.  We stop to visit one of the biggest cave dwellings at Villaggio Saraceno.  Finally, we arrive in the town of Montescaglioso where we have the option to continue with a guided tour of the historical center and Abbey (for an additional fee).

Packed lunch provided. We return to the hotel for dinner.

Parco Materana & Montescaglioso 

We depart the hotel for a day of trekking in the Lucanian Dolomites.  We enjoy incredible panoramas as we ascend toward Pietrapertosa Castle (at 1,080 m elevation).  From there, we trek to Castelmezzano Castle, following the legendary “Path of the Seven Stones” for a part of the journey. From the castle, the view of the  surrounding mountains and valleys, from Matera to Potenza, is simply amazing.

Packed lunch provided. We return to the hotel for dinner.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate (Elevation change of 350m)

Lucanian Dolomites: Pietrapertosa & Castelmezzano

We head to Calanchi Park, where we marvel at the Italian Badlands, watching as the scenery changes to farmland filled with Mediterannean trees such as pine and cypress.  We stop at an old Romanesque-style sanctuary and the “ghost town”of “Old” Craco.  Then we finish the day in the town of Matera, where you will have free time for independent exploration.

We return to the hotel. A packed lunch will be provided.

Calanchi Park & Matera

Today, we trek through the Regional Natural Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the Lucanian Dolomites.  We start the day with a visit to Palazzo, a Benedictine Monastery from the 1100s – 1200s.

We then explore the landscapes of the park on foot, taking the opportunity to notice as the landscape changes from forest to rocky terrain to mountain plateaus.

Packed lunch provided. We return to the hotel for dinner.

Difficulty: Moderate (17km distance, 380m elevation change)

Gallipoli Cognato & Lucanian Dolomites

After a final breakfast at the hotel, we say goodbye and depart via transfer to the train station or airport in Bari.

1-week Trekking in Matera and the Lucanian Dolomites

**Discover two of Italy’s most picturesque islands – Ischia and Capri – on foot during this 6 day trip that combines fascinating walks through history with stunning walks through nature!**

Ischia is a small island located in the Gulf of Naples, a short ferry ride away from the Italian city of Naples.  Inhabited since the Bronze Age, today it is a densely populated island known for its therapeutic hot springs, pleasant weather, and beautiful Mediterannean landscapes.  Unlike the volcanic Ischia, Capri is a rocky island that broke away from the mainland millennia ago, resulting in a landscape distinct from that of Ischia.

During this 6 day journey, we will walk through the highlights of Ischia and Capri.  The trip will combine sites of historical interest, such as medieval churches and Roman ruins, with the incredible natural beauty and stunning panoramic views of the islands.   Our exploration will take us to the highest point in Ischia, Mount Epomeo, as well as in Capri, Monte Solaro.  We will have a chance to explore the volcanoes of Istria followed by a dip in a thermal spring.  We will even get a glimpse of Aenaria, an ancient Roman Citadel that is today submerged in the Bay of Cartaromana. During the trip we will be based at a comfortable 4 star hotel in Ischia (double occupany included in price; single occupancy available for an additional fee).  The hotel has a lovely garden, pool, and spa. Access to the property’s hot springs is included in the price. We will enjoy included breakfast and dinner at the hotel, which prepares meals using local ingredients.  A boxed lunch is not included in the price of the trip.

This journey is appropriate to anyone who is comfortable walking. There will be minimal elevation changes throughout the trip, allowing even those with lower fitness levels to participate.

We will meet at the Napoli Centrale train station.  From there, we head to the port for our ferry to the island of Ischia.

Once in Ischia, we head to our hotel and settle into our accommodations. At dinner, we review the plan for the upcoming days.

Arrival - Napoli to Ischia

Today’s adventure takes us to the top of Monte Epomeo, the highest point in Ischia. We follow the trail through beautiful chestnut and acacia trees, passing ancient churches and old wine cellars.  From the top of Monte Epomeo, we will have an incredible view of the surrounding countryside. Plus, we can visit the 15th century church that sits atop the mountain.

Difficulty: Easy (elevation change of 350 m)

Ischia - Monte Epomeo

Today we visit the nearby island of Capri via ferry. Once there, we set off on foot to discover the island via the Passetiello, stopping at an old hermitage (Eremo di Cetrella). We then begin our ascent to the island’s highest point – the summit of Monte Solaro.  After the rewarding climb, a ferry takes us back to the hotel.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate (elevation change of 587 m)

Capri - Monte Solaro

We begin the day’s adventure with a walk around the Bay of Cartaromana, where you can still see the old roman citadel of Aenaria, which was submerged in ancient times during a natural disaster and can still be seen under the water to this day.

Next, we continue our walk through vineyards and scrub until we reach San Pancrazio and then Monte Vezzi.

Difficulty: Easy (elevation change of 394 m)

Ischia - Piano Liguori

We begin in Cretaio (Casamicciola), where we cross the crater of a volcano and learn about its active fumaroles. We continue past the volcanoes of Montagnone and Monte Rotaro, through lush Mediterannean vegetation until we reach Rotaro’s crater.

We then take a beautiful path through the area’s hot springs, finally stopping at Nitrodi to enjoy the springs.

Difficulty: Easy (change in elevation: 440 m)

Ischia - Monte Rotaro & Nitrodi Hot Springs

After breakfast, we set off to return to mainland Napoli. We arrive at the train station around 3:30 PM.
