**If you’ve ever pondered the idea of climbing in the stunning Andes of Ecuador then look no further! This is your chance to join experienced guides on an unforgettable journey through the mountains!**

Cotopaxi is an active stratavolcano in the Ecuadorian Andes and situated about 50km south of Quito.

At 5897 meteres above sea level, it is the second highest Ecuadorian peak after Chimborazo. Therefore it’s also the second furthest place on earth from the Earth’s centre due to its location on the ‘equatorial bulge’.

One of the highest volcanoes in the world Cotopaxi is truly a splender to behold and provides epic panoramic views of the Andes from its summit.

**This active volcano last erupted in 2016 and reopened for climbing in 2017, there are not many opportunities in the world to climb active volcanoes and get to see the magic first hand!**

On our first day we will drive 3 hours from Riobamba until the Jose Rivas refuge at 4800m. After lunch we will continue walking 3 more hours to reach a glacier at 5000m.

After spending time at the glacier we will return to the refuge for rest and acclimitisation. We will set off on our climb to the summit at midnight to take advantage of the hard snow.

**It will take about 6 to 7 hours to reach the summit, from this elevation the panoramic views are beyond belief and you will be transfixed looking out across the mountainous horizon!**

Our decent will last about 3 to 4 hours to the refuge and then we will taxi you back to Riobamba or a different destination.

We always take more than sufficient precautions needed on a trip like this. My colleagues and I have years of local experience dealing with these conditions.

We require that you have previous mountaineering experience at altitude and that you are of a high fitness level. This is needed because an altitude of over 6000m is not suitable for beginners.

**Ever thought of mountaineering in the stunning Andes of Ecuador? Here’s your chance to join a certified and experienced mountain guide for the trip of a lifetime!**

The wonderfully named Chimborazo is an inactive stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, last being thought to have erupted in 550 C.E.

**With its summit elevated at 6,263 metres above sea level, Chimborazo takes the mantle as the tallest mountain in Ecuador.**

**An interesting fact about Chimborazo is that despite not being the highest world peak above sea level, due to its location on the equatorial bulge, it is the furthest point on the Earth’s surface from the Earth’s centre.**

First officially ascended by Englishman Edward Whymper in 1880, the mountain has two mountain refuges. One at 4800m and the other, named after Whymper, at 5000m.

On our first day we will set off from Riobamba at 10am with about an hours climb ahead to reach our first refuge on Chimborazo at 4800m.

From here we will walk with our equipment and team to the Whymper refuge at 5000m. We will spend the afternoon and evening at the refuge to acclimatise to the altitude.

The second day will see us rise at midnight to set off on an 8 hour climb towards the summit, leaving at this time allows us to take advantage of the hard snow.

After about 1 or 2 hours we will arrive to a glacier and then after another hour of climbing and we will reach El Castillo (The Castle) and from there it is about 4 hours more climbing until we arrive at the peak at 6268m.

**From this elevation the panoramic views will leave you speachless and you can really appreciate the scale of the Andes and its magnificent beauty!**

The descent back down to the refuge takes about 3 to 4 hours and we will leave for Riobamba around midday.

You will need to be of a high physical fitness and have mountaineering experience, including ascents. We require this as an altitude of over 6000m is not appropriate for beginners.
