Climbing Mount Ararat in Turkey is a unique experience that combines rich natural and cultural aspects. On this 8-day adventure, we will reach the top of this holy peak and also visit some of the most stunning cultural landmarks in Turkey.

At 5,137 m (16,854 ft), Mount Ararat, a dormant compound volcano, is the highest point in Turkey. It is also a cultural landmark due to its biblical significance, as Ararat was the resting spot for Noah’s arc in the Old Testament. Climbing Mount Ararat is therefore both a mountaineering and nature experience as it is a cultural one. Furthermore, on this tour, we combine the Ararat ascent with a short trip to Akdamar Island, which is also culturally and historically significant.

We set off on our adventure after an airport pick-up and drive to Dogubeyazit.  From there, the next day we head to Eli Village (2.000m) and begin our ascent to the first camp. After an acclimatization day, we continue on to camp 2, and finally, on day 5 of our tour, we will attempt the summit. Additionally, we have an extra day scheduled, just in case we need it for another summit attempt. When we descend, we will visit Akdamar island before returning back home. To join this adventure you need to be physically fit and ideally have some prior experience under your belt. However, this is not a highly technical climb. If you are in doubt about your preparation level, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

MEET AT VAN AIRPORT TRANSFER TO DOGUBAYAZIT

After breakfast we load our luggage and camping equipment on our vehicle and drive to Eli Village (2.000m), Our  
luggage will be carried by mules and horses.. On the way it’s possible to meet some semi nomadic families, who use  
the fresh green Plateaus of the Mt. Ararat for their sheep flocks. We walk to our first Camp Site (Base Camp) which is  
set up on elevation of 3.200m.  
Walking time: 4 h; ascent: approximately 1.200m (depending on road conditions & starting point)  
Overnight: at Mount Ararat base camp 3.200m  
Meals: B / L / D

ASCENT TO MT. ARART CAMP 1 - 3200 M

Trek to camp II (4. 2OOm), about 4 hours trekking time. Return to camp 1. Afternoon is free for preparation for next  
day, because we will go up to the summit. Dinner and overnight in camp. (Ascent = 1100m / Descent = 1100 m)  
Overnight: camp in 3200m.  
Meals: B/L/D

ACCLIMATISATION DAY

Trek to camp II (4. 2OOm), about 4/5 hours trekking time. All luggage will be carried by pack animals. A short  
course will be given on how to use ice-ax and crampons. Overnight in camp. (Descent = 1200 m)  
Overnight: Camp in 4200m.  
Meals: B /L/D

Mt. ARARAT (Camp II, 4200m)

Between 2:00 – 2:30 in the morning we will have breakfast and start walking between 3:00 or 3:30 to get a good  
view at the sunrise on the top. After 650 m. ascent, we reach Glacier at 4.850m. After we fixed our Crampons we  
continue our ascent till we reach the Summit of the Mt. Ararat. If the weather is clear we can see the Mt. Damavand  
in Iran, the Elbrus in the Caucasus and the Kackar Mountains near the Black Sea. We enjoy the great panoramic view  
from the Summit and afterward start descending to our Base Camp at 3.200m.  
Walking time: 9/10 h; ascent: 937m; descent: 1.937m  
Overnight: at Mount Ararat base camp 3.200m  
Meals: B / L / D

Mt. ARARAT SUMMIT (5165m)

Extra day, depending on the weather conditions on Day 5, we may make another summit attempt. Otherwise, omit  
this day. If the extra day isn’t necessary, that day will be spent in Dogubeyazıt. Descend to Cevirme Village about 3  
hours and return to Dogubeyazit. We visit Ishakpaşa palace. There is a chance of trying Turkish Bath. Late  
afternoon free for visit city center Doğubeyazıt.

Mt. ARARAT – DOGUBEYAZIT

Transfer to Van and we visit Akdamar Island which is the most important Armenian Church in East Turkey. On the  
island it stands the 10th-century Church of the Holy Cross, Architect Monk Manuel built the church between the  
years 915 and 921. The Church was consecrated in honor of the holy cross. Reliefs, depicting scenes from the Old  
and New Testaments, daily Iife such as hunting, run along the exterior of the church. Overnight at hotel in Van.

AKDAMAR CHURCH -ISLAND of AKDAMAR

Group transfer to Van airport from hotel (15 minutes) fly back or depending on request we organize hotel and  
transfer in İstanbul and add 1 or 2 days extra sightseeing tour in İstanbul. Meals: B- –  
Tour ends.

The Lycian Way trekking route stretches over 500 km (310 mi) along the southwest coast of Turkey. This amazing trail is famous for its beauty and its ancient ruins and towns. On this 9-day adventure, we will have the chance to explore this unique path. We will admire its gorgeous landscapes as we learn about its deep cultural roots.

Every day, we will spend 5 to 6 hours hiking at a maximum altitude of 900 m. We will hike along rocky mule paths,  limestone trails, and dirt roads. Therefore, a good fitness level is a must. You can find a detailed description of the day to day itinerary below.

Airport pickup

We will visit the city of Fethiye, the largest Lycian coast town  and built on the ruins of the old Telmessos. Here we visit  the old town sites, such as a necropolis, a huge stone sarcophagus, a Roman theater or the splendid tomb-temple of Amintas, dug in the rock in 350 BC. Later we will go to Kayakoy, the largest ghost town in Asia Minor. This population was home to thousands of Greeks until the end of  First World War in 1918, and then  Turkey gained independence and its inhabitants were sent to an area near Athens. Today the city has been very well preserved and it is possible to visit about 800 Greek-style houses and two beautiful Orthodox churches chapels and cisterns. We will continue our route to Oludeniz, an idyllic place by the sea with pine trees as a backdrop and that owes its name (dead sea) to a lagoon located at the western end of the beach, which is protected by hills and a narrow canal keeping calm its transparent waters even during the worst storms. We will return by car to Fethiye, where we will sleep.

Fethiye-Kayakoy-Oludeniz

Today’s spectacular route winds along the shoulders of the Baba Dagi along a spectacular and panoramic path, which runs parallel to the coast. The ascent continues smoothly and rewards you with fabulous views of the long sandy beach of Turkey.  We will pass through lush pine forests and remote villages before descending to Faralya, located on a small plateau above the Butterfly Valley, where the steep limestone cliffs fall over the sea. It is one of the most amazing biotopes that exist and a paradise for lepidopteron, it depends on the season, if we are lucky, we can check in its entire splendor why the name of this valley.

Ovacik to  Faralya via Kozagac-  Butterfly Valley view

Following one of the sections of the famous Lycian route, the day begins in ascent, through a pine forest until reaching an open area of ​​terraces with spectacular views of the villages, as well as the sea and some distant islands. We descend to the village and pass through the town of Kabak. Bordering the highest slopes of the town we follow an ancient path that ascends through a pine forest to the small village of Alinca. There we will have a more than deserved lunch with the villagers before continuing the road, above some of the most beautiful bays of this spectacular coast. A final part of track reaches Gey, where the rural accommodation is located where we will spend the night. It is a very simple place, which offers the possibility of knowing better the way of life of the hospitable inhabitants of this beautiful region.

Faralya - Gey

The fields of cultivation of Gey will give us good morning before taking a narrow path that will take us between olive groves and from where to see the celestial waters of the sea. Later we will ascend between orchards to end up going down to the Sydima to visit its ruins of the ancient city. We will eat in a family home and after a short break we will go to Xanthos, the first capital Lycia and one of the leading cities of the Lycian League, one of the first democratic unions in history. The Lycians were one of the first civilizations in the Mediterranean to ask to fight for their independence. Writers like Herodotus and Homer highlight in many of their stories the bravery of Lycian warriors. We can see some remains of this glorious civilization on the east bank of the Esen River. Xantos was named a World Heritage City in 1988. After the visit of Xanthos we will go to another city that holds the same title, Patara, capital of the Lycian League in Roman Period. Transfer to our accommodation in Patara.

Gey - Sidyma - Patara

We start the day with a short transfer to Uçagiz, a small fishing village where we will take a boat to see the submerged city of Simena up close, after the visit we will dock on the island of Kekova and start our way to Kapakli. Along the way we can visit the necropolis of the ancient city of Kekova and its medieval castle as well as liven up our road with the sounds of goats and sheep that populate this area. We will finish our walk-in Kapakli and then transferred to our accommodation in Çirali.

Kapakli –Ucagiz  - Kekova Island -Simena  - Çirali

We start our walk from hotel and trek along the Lycian coast to Yanartas, we will begin our ascent to the place known by the local inhabitants as “Monte Ardiente”, the ancient Mount Chimera, a spectacular place characterized by a permanent fire caused by methane emissions and located near the valley of Olympos. Our path will continue towards the Ulupinar stream, we will stop to eat at a fish farm located next to this stream. This afternoon is left free to you to discover 8km long Cirali beach or Olympos ancient Site.

Çirali – Ulupinar  - Çirali

On our last day along the Lycian coast, we start our walk towards very well located historical site Phaselis.  Phaselis has three harbors: the ‘Northern Harbor’, the ‘Battle Harbor’ and the ‘Protected (Sun) Barbour’, of which the last is the most important today. A 24-metre-wide ancient street runs through the middle of the city. The ‘Hadrian Waterway Gate’ is on the southern part of the street. There are ruins of shops and stores on the sides of the street and near these are ruins of public places such as Roman baths, agoras and theatres. These structures are dated to the 2nd century BC. There are water canals between the town centre and the 70 m plateau. There are also numerous sarcophagi. The walk would take us to the hidden cove along the time forgotten trails with spectacular views. In the afternoon, we will be transferred to the historic city center of Antalya called Kaleici. We will have the opportunity to finish our trip very relaxed visiting a typical Hamam. We will have our farewell dinner at a restaurant.
