Hisao is the third of the Morales brothers, and like his eldest brother Eli, Hisao began working with trekking and climbing groups from a young age while still at school. He soon developed a passion for climbing and climbed extensively with porters & guides while receiving ongoing instruction from Peruvian and international guide instructors with the House of Guides in Huaraz.

Hisao took a break from guiding to attend university in Lima and graduated with double degrees in psychology & philosophy, and in education. He then spent 3 months in New Zealand in 2003 on a working holiday and improving his English, before returning to Huaraz to found Peruvian Andes Adventures with Eli.

Hisao speaks fluent English and good German which he is continuing to study. Hisao has considerable experience in the education sector, business and in organising trekking & climbing groups and is our business general manager

This **12-day Cordillera Huayhuash trek** is the short way to go through a magnificent area of the **Peruvian Andes**.

This program is basically a shorter version of my classic 15-day hike through this area and it’s essentially the same route, but without visiting the **Siula Grande Base Camp**.

So, during this 12-day program you’ll enjoy the breathtaking views of this unique mountain range. We’ll be surrounded by rugged snow capped peaks, pristine white glaciers and deep blue lakes and lagoons.

And although it’s not a technical hike, you’ll need to be in a good physical condition because we’ll walk from 6 to 8 hours every day. And the whole route is over 4000 meters for which you’ll need to have a good acclimatization.

**But the effort will pay off every day! The Cordillera Huayhuash is one of the most impressive mountain ranges in South America.** 

Plus you’ll enjoy some of the spectacular features that this place have to offer. Like the **trout fishing at Laguna Jahuacocha**, **the spotting of large herds of Llamas and Alpacas near lake Viconga or even the relaxing natural hot springs near on of our campsites.** This adventure will be an amazing experience!

Drive from Huaraz to the village of Llamac to set up camp (3300 m). 4 to 5 hours drive.

Huaraz -Chiquián - Llamac

We’ll follow the river Llamac, hiking gradually up the valley to camp in open grassy countryside at Quartelhuain (4200 m). 6 hours hike.

We’ll cross our first pass, Punta Cacanan (4700 m) and then descend to the camp at a large lake Laguna Mitucocha (4220 m). 6 hours hike.

We’ll climb steadily to our next pass, Punta Carhuac (4650 m), to camp at the trout filled Laguna Carhuacocha (4150 m) 6 hours.

We’ll spend an extra day at the spectacular Laguna Carhuacocha. Hike up to visit the three lakes of Siula, take an easy walk around Carhuacocha lake, go trout fishing or have a rest day and enjoy the surroundings.

There are 2 options: A gradual ascent on a good path to cross Pass Carnicero (4600 m), which takes around 5 or 6 hours. Or a more demanding alternative Siula Pass (4800 m), which is a 6 to 7 hours hike. We’ll camp by the small Laguna Carnicero (4300 m).

We’ll go through the small settlement of Huayhuash, where a few farming families live, and then climb to yet another pass Portachuelo de Huayhuash (4750 m). We’ll descend past the large lake Viconga where we often see large herds of Llama and Alpaca to camp at (4480 m).

By now you should be well acclimatised and ready to cross our highest pass: Punta Cuyoc (5000 m). The descent is initially steep but then it becomes easier and we’ll arrive to our camp in the large and open Huanacpatay valley (4300 m). 6 hours hiek.

We’ll go down down the valley Qto the large mountain village of Huallapa. In the afternoon we’ll climb through a steep valley to a high camp in the pasture at Huatiac (4350 m). 6 hours hike.

We’ll cross two passes, Punta Tapush (4750 m) and Punta Yaucha (4800 m) and then descend to our camp at the beautiful Laguna Jahuacocha (4150 m). 8 hours hike.

An extra day at Laguna Jahuacocha which must be one of the most beautiful sites in the Huayhuash. Climb up Cerro Amarrillo Peak (5000 m), visit Soltera Cocha Lake, hike up the pass Sambunya (4750 m) or take a rest and try trout fishing.

The final pass Pampa Llamac (4300 m) and a long descent to Llamac. 5½ hours. Return to Huaraz in our private van.

We will depart from the village of Olleros and hike up across the valley to Sacracancha, situated at 4,080 meters. 5 hours of walking.

On this day, we will cross the Yanashallash Pass, which is not steep, and stop at the top to contemplate the beautiful small lake and the mountains surrounding us. Then, we will descend to set our camp at Shongo (4,088 meters). 7 hours of hiking.

On our last day, we will go through several villages and meet the locals. Then, we will descend to Chavin, at 3,150 meters (4 to 5 hours).

We will drive for 3 hours from Huaraz to Cashapampa (2,800 meters) and meet our donkey drivers, load all the equipment onto donkeys and start the trek. We will follow the Santa Cruz river, first in a narrow canyon and then, after lunch, through a wider valley. Here, we will start to see beautiful snow-covered peaks. Camping near the river at Llamacorral (3,750 meters – 5 hours).

This will be an easier day (4 hours). We hike along two small lakes and then get to see the famous Alpamayo mountain. Our camp will be at Taullipampa (4,250 meters), where we will be surrounded by stunning peaks, near Punta Union Pass.

On day 3, we will climb for 2 to 3 hours to the Punta Union Pass, at 4,750 meters of altitude, and descend through a small alpine lake where we can stop for lunch. Our descent will continue to the Huaripampa Valley and to our camp in a valley away from the main trail at Paria (3,850 meters – 7 hours).

We will go down the Quebrada Huaripampa and pass through farming villages, to reach Vaqueria, after 4 to 5 hours of walk. Our private van will drive us to Portuchuelo Pass (4,767 meters), through the famous Llangunuco Lakes. Finally, we will return to Huaraz and end the program.

**I will accompany you on this daunting Huayhuash circuit trek in Peru. For 9 days, you will hike through the impressive peaks of the Cordillera Huayhuash and cross many high passes including the formidable Cuyoc pass. You will also get to relax in the warm healing waters of Viconga, so it is definitely not worth missing!** 

Keep in mind that the **trek is for the daredevils** who are in **extremely good shape and have a high level of endurance.** Since we’ll be crossing a high pass each day without any rest, it is highly recommended that you spend at least 3 days in Huaraz prior to the trek to be well acclimatized.

We’ll begin in the city of **Huaraz (3090m)**. From there, **we’ll drive through scenic country roads to reach Quartelhuain (4200m ),** and you will experience an altitude gain of 1110m in a single day!

The following days will be spent crossing many high passes including **Punta Cacanan (4700m), Paso de Carhuac (4650m), Carnicero (4600m) and the highest pass of the trip, Punta Cuyoc (5000m).** You will hike on **an arid, rocky terrain, which will test your skills alongside offering jaw-dropping views of the towering peaks and pristine lakes.**

The trek also features **a relaxing dip in the thermal bath at Laguna Viconga** on the fifth day, which will be **an excellent way to ward off at least some of the tiredness from the previous hike.**

Passing via the passes of **Punta Tapush and Punta Yaucha we’ll finally make our way across Pampa Llamac (4300m)**  to return to Llamac and complete this unbelievable circuit.

Spend 3 days acclimatizing in Huaraz.

Arrive in Huaraz (3090m)

Drive from Huaraz to the village of Llamac and then head onto Quartelhuain (4200m). Set up the camp in a wide grassy valley surrounded by beautiful hills.

In the morning we’ll cross the first pass of Punta Cacanan (4700m) then descend to our camp beside the beautiful lake of Laguna Mitucocha (4220m).

Duration: 6 hours

**C**ross the Paso de Carhuac pass(4650m) and descend to the camp at the beautiful lake Laguna Carhuacocha (4150m).

Duration: 6 hours

We’ll cross the Carnicero pass (4600m), and make an easy descent to the camp either at the isolated Laguna Carnicero (4300m) or near the enclave of Huayhuash (4330m).

Crossing the Portachuelo de Huayhuash pass(4750m), we skirt around the beautiful lake Laguna Viconga before walking up the valley for about half-an-hour to set up camp (4480m)

**C**ross the highest pass of the trip, Punta Cuyoc (5000m) and then descend to the valley of Quebrada Huanacpatay to reach the campsite.

**Today, we’ll** cross two passes – Pass Punta Tapush (4750m) and Punta Yaucha (4800m). before we descend to our camp near the beautiful Laguna Jahuacocha (4150m).

Starting early, after crossing the last Pampa Llamac (4300m) pass, we’ll descend to Llamac. From Llamac, we’ll drive you back to Huaraz for a hot shower!

One of the beautiful peaks in the **Cordillera Blanca of Peru**, **Vallunaraju (5,686m)** is a fantastic mountain to climb. Moreover, it’s actually not a very difficult mountain to climb either. That is why I am happy to offer the chance to reach this mammoth peak’s summit in just **2 days**.

Our journey to the summit of **Vallunaraju** will begin in the beautiful northern city of **Huaraz**. From there, we will drive for approximately **1.5 hours to the Llaca Valley (4,350m)**. At the valley you can enjoy some breathtaking views of the **Cordillera Blanca**. After our arrival, we will climb for **approximately 2 to 3 hours up to the Morena Camp (5,130m),** where we will spend the night.

On the second day of the trip, we will make our way up **Vallunaraju**. The path we will be taking is steady, but not overtly steep or technically difficult. However, the climb is physically taxing. As a result, you should be in **good physical condition**. Finally, you will really get to push yourself on the final 60 meters of the climb, which is quite steep and exposed. After you’ve soaked up the glory of the great ascent, as well as the amazing views, we will make our way back down to the **Llaca Valley**, and then **Huaraz**. The total time of the climb and subsequent descent is **approximately 10 hours**.

Following the river Llamac, we will hike up gradually to Quartelhuain, located at 4,200 meters (6 hours).

On this day, we will cross Punta Cacanan pass (4,700 meters) and then descend to Laguna Mitucocha (4,220 meters), where we will set up camp (6 hours).

On this day, we will reach Paso de Carhuac, at 4,650 meters of altitude. We will camp at Lake Carhuacocha (4,150 meters, from where we can contemplate great views of the surrounding peaks  (6 hours).

Hiking to the three lakes of Siula, around Lake Carhuacocha, fishing or simply a rest day to enjoy the surroundings.

Extra day in Lake Carhuacocha

On this day, we can either take a 5 to 6-hour ascent to Pass Carnicero (4,600 meters) or a more demanding option to Siula Pass (4,800 meters) in 6 to 7 hours. Night in tents at Laguna Carnicero (4,300 meters).

We will go through a small settlement of farmers in Huayhuash and ascend to Portachuelo Pass, at 4,750 meters. Afterwards, we will descend to Laguna Viconga, where we can usually find large herds of Llama and Alpaca. Camping at 4,480 meters. Total journey of 6-7 hours. Near the camp, we can enjoy natural hot spring baths.

Now, we are ready to cross the highest pass of the trek: Punta Cuyoc (5,000 meters). The descent will be steep at first but it gets easier as we move. Camping in Quebrada Huanacpatay, at 4,300 meters (4-5 hours).

On day 9, we will take a challenging climb to Cerro Antonio Pass (4,788 meters). Here, we will get to see some of the most fantastic views of the trek, such as Siula glacier and several small blue lakes. The descent will be steep at times and we will traverse  Laguna Jurau to reach Quebrada Calinca, at Cutatambo (4,100 meters), where we will set our camp (5 to 6 hours).

On this day, we will go to the base camp of the Siula Grande mountain.

We will go across Quebrada Calinca to the village of Huallapa. Then, we will climb through a steep valley to the high camp in Huatiac, at 4,350 meters (7 hours).

This day will be shorter than the day before. We will cross the Punta Tapush Pass (4,750 meters) to Laguna Susucocha and Cashapampa, at 4,500 meters (3 to 4 hours).
