Expedition to the South Continental Ice Cap

If you love trekking, **Cerro Huemul Circuit** is for you. It is located in **El Chaltén**, a town in the southern part of the Cordillera de Los **Andes** in Santa Cruz Province, **Argentina**. Indeed, Cerro Huemul is a vantage point to look down part of the Argentina Patagonia.

Cerro Huemul also offers many hiking trails and what is even more encouraging, in none of them we will need to use technical equipment. These routes do not require permits but if we want, we can register at the gateway of **Los Glaciares National Park**.

I propose to you the following itinerary.

**Day 1**  
We leave El Chaltén and head towards **Cerro Pliegue Tumbado**. Here we will climb down and trek for 5 or 6 hours along to get to **Laguna Toro**. We will spend a night of free camping there.

**Day 2: Ascent to Paso del Viento**  
From Laguna Toro we climb up to Paso del Viento. Once there, we have to climb down to spend the night in the hut. In this part of the trip we will start to see the **Patagonian Ice Cap**, which turns the journey into an exciting experience.

**Day 3: Resting day**  
During our resting day we get nearer the South Patagonian Ice Cap to have a better view and if the weather allows, touch it!

**Day 4**  
We hike trough the southeast ridge for 6 or 7 hours until we reach **Huemul Pass**. It is a great viewpoint of **Lake Viedma** and its glacier.

**Day 5: Return to El Chaltén**  
We return climbing down to **Bahia de Los Pantanos**. Then walking from that bay to **Bahia Tunel** about 16 km (3 h). Finally a van will take us to El Chalten, where the trip ends.
