If you would like to take your first steps into ice climbing, this course is for you!
The Villarrica National Park is located in the Andes Mountain Range, in the Araucania and Los Rios regions, in Chile. It has a surface area of 630 km², with widespread forests, rivers, lakes, caves, and massive active and inactive volcanic peaks. The park’s best-known volcanoes are the Lanin (3,776m), the Villarrica (2,860), and the Quetrupillan (2,360m).
I usually hold the course from June to October. Participants can join me on a 1-day training or on a longer program, depending on their goals and time availability.
During this course, I will teach the basic ice climbing skills and techniques, and provide some key safety guidelines for climbers. The following are a few examples of the topics we will cover:
Gestural techniques of progression: ascent, descent and crossings
Optimization in the use of tools
Types of anchors and their placement
Screw placement
The use of ice axes and crampons in ice waterfalls
Equipment and technical material
Understanding the environment
Ice levels
Arranging meetings on ice
Techniques for descending and rappelling
Safety during rope progression
In order to take this program, participants must have completed the mountaineering course in the Villarrica National Park I teach, or prove equivalent knowledge. In addition, they are required to be in good physical condition.
If you are interested in getting into ice climbing, don’t miss this opportunity. Book this course now! Tell me about your goals, background, and time availability, and I will prepare the course that fits you best.
If you haven’t taken the mountaineering course yet and would like to do so, please register here. If you are looking for other activities in the area, I recommend the Villarica volcano guided trekking ascent and the Lanin 2-day hiking ascent tour.
