Description

Calling all hikers to Fuya Fuya, Ecuador! Join me on this 2-day climb to the top of this inactive volcano.

Located 55 miles away from Quito, Fuya Fuya (13,986 feet) is located above many lakes, giving anyone at the top a spectacular view. And on a clear day, you will be able to see the peaks of Cayambe, Cotacachi and Imbabura craters and village of Otavalo and city of Quito in the distance.

We will begin this non-technical but steep hike walking past the Mojanda lakes, which are located about 12,800 feet above sea level. These three lakes are situated in tall yellow grassbeds surrounded by rolling hills. The largest lake is Lake Caricocha (Laguna Grande de Mojanda) and is almost 2 miles in width. Lake Huarmicocha and Lake Yanacocha are also located close-by, and the colors of the lake not only look mesmerizing close up, but also from above. After passing these lakes, it will take us about 3 hours to get to the summit, where we will enjoy a beautiful view and a nice lunch. We will then descend the mountain for 2 hours before reaching our campsite.

The following day we will visit the Archeological Park of Cochasquì, where some of the most well-preserved pre-Inca mounds and pyramids exist. The site was built by the Cayambi-Caranqui nation and it is the belief of many archaeologists that Cochasquì was the ceremonial center of the region at the time. More still, these pyramids have been excavated in such a way that visitors have better insight into their construction processes, which occurred between 950-1550 AD.

Although this route is steep, this trip is intended for people with any level of experience with hiking. And while we will make every effort to adhere to the itinerary, weather conditions and the health of climbers may be cause for some changes, so please keep this in mind when signing up.

So, request to book this trip if you have always wanted to climb up Fuya Fuya!
