The Cochamó is a U-shaped valley in the Chilean Patagonia, within the region of Los Lagos, 93km south of Puerto Varas. Due to its huge granite walls and its lush old-growth forests, it is called the Yosemite of Chile.

This area, which belongs to the Andes, is becoming a popular climbing destination since the year 2000. Rock climbers from all over the world come here to try some stunning over-1,000m routes, most of them multi-pitch (from 8 to more than 20 pitches).

On this 4-day trip, we will discover one of the most beautiful moderated lines in Cochamó, “The Shark’s Fin Ridge”. This 525-meter route, with 10 pitches and a difficulty level of 5.10+, will take us to the higher part of the French valley, offering a panoramic view of the whole area.

Although it is not a hard line, it requires previous experience in climbing, belaying and abseilingIt is an excellent choice to get started in multi-pitch climbing, or just to live a unique experience!  Keep in mind that you should have a good fitness level as we will hike 4 to 6 hours to Cerro La Junta. For more information, you can check the itinerary below.

About the guide

guide profile img

As a kid I grew up next to the majestic volcanoes and lakes of southern Chile. When I became an alpinist, I started climbing the big mountains of the Maipo Valley and that soon took me to climb in the Alps.

With my wife, dogs and son we live in Austria and in Chile, sharing life in two different places, but in the same way.

Since the year 2009, I'm guiding mostly the volcanoes of southern Chile and, when possible, the big mountains around Santiago and the Atacama desert.

I'm a member of the Chilean Mountain Guide Association (, with whom we are working to bring the IFMGA standard to Chile, not only to validate our profession, but also to start teaching future mountain guides in Chile.

I work with a team of guides in the Puerto Varas area, so when I'm in Austria, I can arrange for you to climb with one of my colleagues.
